BWW Review: THE ARNOLD SPORTS FESTIVAL Transforms Columbus Into A Four Day Fitness Fiesta
The Arnold Sports Festival, the largest multi-sports event in the nation, celebrated a record number of sports, health and fitness events when it returned to Columbus, Ohio for the 28th consecutive year. Co-produced by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Lorimer since 1989, the once dubbed "Arnold Classic" which was held on a single day, has now grown into a four-day day health and fitness extravaganza. Due to its massive draw, events were held in several venues throughout Central Ohio, including the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Ohio Expo, Hyatt Regency, Hilton Downtown, LC Pavilion, Otterbein University, Sawmill Athletic Club, New Albany High School, and even the Hollywood Casino, among others.
New events this year included IFBB Arnold Pro Wheelchair bodybuilding, Indoor Triathlon, Baton Twirling, and Pro Football Hall of Fame. Not to leave out the kids, there was also a new Arnold SportsWorld Kids & Teens EXPO, which hosted clinics and demonstrations in baseball, chess, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey and soccer, among others. Stage entertainment featured The Arnold Quest For Talent! talent show and the first Miss Arnold Teen Fitness Pageant, making this year's festival the biggest yet!
Spanning over four full days with 70 sports and events and 18,000 participants, The Arnold Sports Festival certainly did its share to kick-start spring fitness for the Buckeye state - and there wasn't a flabby arm in sight! For a mere $15 entry fee ($20 at the door and children 14 and under are free), you can soak in the popular EXPO experience with a variety of sports and events. With over 950 booths at the EXPO, you will be set for bikini season with the latest in sports equipment, apparel, nutrition and other newest trends in the fitness industry. There, you can sample the latest products, win prizes, and watch various competitions and entertainment on stage. That is, if you can strong arm your way through the massive crowds.
For additional fees, you can heighten your experience with other events, such as the Arnold Amateur Classic Bodybuilding, IFBB Meet & Greet, Pole Fitness National Championships, Bikini International, Strongman Classic, Pro Boxing, the Arnold Party With the Pros, and various VIP packages, among others.
What was once a one-day bodybuilding competition for elite athletes has now exploded into a four day celebration of sports, health and fitness activities that all ages and fitness levels can enjoy. Co-producer, Jim Lorimer, said, "We created the Arnold Kids Fitness EXPO in 2015 to give parents and their children an outlet to experience dozens of sports and activities and hopefully help them find one they wish to pursue." And believe me. If it's not at The Arnold this weekend, then it simply doesn't exist. From Fencing to Jump Rope to Arm Wrestling to Martial Arts to Baton Twirling to CrossFit to Swimming to Running to Equestrian to Fitness Pageants to Pole Fitness to Table Tennis to Break Dancing and more, kids and adults will be excited to get off the couch and move. Even kids will be motivated to put down the Xbox controller, lace up their shoes, and get active!
Although a bit overwhelming with the crowd size and varying locations, there are several maps and information booths throughout the facilities to point you in the right direction. You'll also want to do your homework so you come prepared with an idea of where to go and what to see.
Whether you are a fitness enthusiast, a sports fan, or just someone who enjoys a broad range of activities, then Columbus is definitely the place to be the first weekend every March. If you missed this year's Arnold Sports Festival, don't worry... he'll be back....
