(8/26/2014) - A Red Orchid Theatre opens its 22nd Season with the US premiere of Strandline, written by Abbie Spallen and directed by JR Sullivan (The Faith Healer). The production runs October 23 - December 7, 2014 at A Red Orchid Theatre, 1531 N. Wells. Press Opening is Monday, October 27, 2014 at 7 p.m.

(8/26/2014) - According to the New York Times, Ravinia Festival music director James Conlon announced that he will depart his position after the 2015 season. He told NYT: "I have worked year-round, including every summer, since 1974. There are things I wish to accomplish, both musical and personal, and I need dedicated time to realize these projects."

(8/26/2014) - Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) presents Isango Ensemble's The Magic Flute (Impempe Yomlingo), bringing thirty actors and musicians from South Africa to Chicago as part of CST's celebrated World's Stage Series. The Magic Flute reimagines Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most beloved operatic work, incorporating African singing, pulsating beats and spirited storytelling into this 223-year-old classic. Based in Cape Town, the vibrant company of the Isango Ensemble unites the diverse nation of Africa by reinventing classics from the Western theater canon within a South African setting. Adapted and directed by Isango co-founder Mark Dornford-May, The Magic Flute took London by storm, garnering London's prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. The production will be performed at Skyline Stage on Navy Pier (next door to CST) for a limited engagement, September 25-28, 2014.

(8/26/2014) - Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) has announced casting for the first production of its 2014/15 season, George Orwell's Animal Farm, a world premiere adaptation by Althos Low. Directed by SYA Artistic and Educational Director Hallie Gordon, the cast of professional actors features Will Allan, Jasmine Bracey, Lucy Carapetyan, Amelia Hefferon, Matt Kahler, Mildred Marie Langford, Blake Montgomery, Dana Murphy, Lance Newton and Sean Parris. Animal Farm runs October 15 - November 9, 2014; the press performance is on Saturday, October 18 at 3pm. Performances Tuesday through Friday at 10am are reserved for school groups only; public performances are scheduled Friday at 7:30pm (except October 17), Saturday at 3 and 7:30pm and Sunday at 3pm. (8/26/2014) - Theatre at the Center, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster, celebrates its 25th anniversary season in 2015 by bringing to the stage hilarious spoofs, rock n' roll musicals and heartwarming stories, each with a close relationship to iconic films. The season opens with ON GOLDEN POND, the touching, funny, and warmly insightful story that went from a Tony Award on Broadway to the Oscar winning film, running February 26 through March 29. Overflowing with heart and humor, the extraordinary new Broadway musical, BIG FISH, will inspire audiences to live life to the fullest May 7 to June 7. Fans of "the King" of Rock n' Roll will be thrilled to join in song and dance at ALL SHOOK UP! THE MUSIC OF ELVIS PRESLEY. Inspired by the movies and songs of Elvis Presley as well as the William Shakespeare comedy Twelfth Night, the musical runs July 16 through August 16. SPAMALOT, the uproariously hilarious Monty Python-inspired farce about King Arthur and his band of raunchy knights runs September 17 through October 18. Returning to Theatre at the Center during the holiday season is the nostalgic family favorite A CHRISTMAS STORY, running November 19 to December 27.

(8/26/2014) - Producing Artistic Director Gwendolyn Whiteside and American Blues Theater, Chicago's second oldest Equity ensemble, announce that American Blues Theater is currently accepting submissions for the 2015 Blue Ink Playwriting Award through Monday, Sept. 1 at 11:59 p.m. The Blue Ink Playwriting Award was created in 2010 to support new work. Competition rules are attached to this email Playwrights may only submit one (1) manuscript each year for consideration. The winning play will be selected by Producing Artistic Director Gwendolyn Whiteside and American Blues Theater's award-winning Ensemble. The winner of this annual competition will be awarded the Blue Ink Playwriting Award of $1,000 and receive a staged reading at American Blues Theater in Chicago. (8/25/2014) - Writers Theatre Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Executive Director Kathryn M. Lipuma have announced the next phase of development of its new Theatre Center: demolition, groundbreaking and construction. Having raised $25 million of the $31 million base goal for the On to a New Stage fundraising campaign (with plans for an additional $3 million cash reserve), Writers Theatre has hired general contractor W.E. O'Neil to helm the project. Demolition will begin September 2, 2014 and the construction is expected to be completed by early 2016. A groundbreaking ceremony will take place in mid-October 2014, with details forthcoming.
