Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the first images of legendary entertainer Liza Minnelli, who will play herself in the tenth episode of the NBC musical drama series SMASH. In the episode, the actress will perform an original song, written by SMASH producers Marc Shaiman and Scott Whittman, along with Christian Borle, who portrays Tom.

Comments NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt of the episode, "This [Broadway] community is so small that a Tom would know Liza Minnelli personally. It's an episode where Tom is trying to make it up to Ivy (Megan Hilty) because they've had a bit of a falling out. He takes her to a restaurant because it's her birthday and as a peace-offering, he presents Liza Minnelli to sing a song that he wrote. And Christian and Liza sing it together." From Universal Television in association with DreamWorks Television, SMASH stemmed from an idea of executive producer and multiple Emmy and Oscar winner Steven Spielberg ("ER," "Schindler's List"). Executive producers also include Joshua Safran ("Gossip Girl"), Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Oscar-winning "Chicago," "Hairspray"), Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey ("United States of Tara," "The Borgias"), Tony and Grammy Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman ("Hairspray," "Catch Me If You Can"), Jim Chory (NBC's "Heroes," "American Dreams") and Theresa Rebeck ("Mauritius," "NYPD Blue").
