BWW Asks: What Should NBC's Next Live Musical Be?
Yesterday BWW reported that the NBC network plans to stage another live musical in 2014 following the huge success of last Thursday's THE SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE, starring Carrie Underwood. Executive producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan will once again produce the live broadcast.
The New York Times confirmed the news that NBC's chairman of the entertainment division, Robert Greenblat was currently working alongside Meron and Zadan to whittle down a list of potential productions which included "family-friendly Broadway classics with a lot of familiar songs."
"All weekend, people have been calling us and emailing us," Greenblatt told The Times. "Rights holders of musicals have said, 'Please do one of our shows.' We're excited to try it again."
Greenblatt even went so far as to note that the staging of a live musical may become an annual event on the Peacock Network. "There's enough to do a handful of these over the next years, if we keep increasing the learning curve," he said. "There may be a little bit of a phenomenon to the first one of these. Who knows what happens Year 2, 3 or 4. But you've got to have events. I think we could do this again - and again and again."
So BWW would like to know, which musical would you like to see staged next for a live broadcast on NBC? Another Rodgers and Hammerstein classic? An edgier modern-day offering? Tell us what you think!
