Ghettogloss Founder And Guerilla Artist Fiora Boes Launches Online Exhibition

Has bulk-item retail behemoth Costco been hacked? This week, the work of Los Angeles based artist Fiora Boes suddenly and mysteriously appeared on the homepage of Costco.com, touted alongside its high-ticket items and essential product specials including patio furniture and big screen TVs.

Though Costco has in fact earned a reputation as a fine art purveyor, it hasn't come without some controversy. Six years ago, questions were raised about the authenticity of its Picassos, and it was only a couple years ago that the company cautiously and somewhat quietly started selling rare pieces by iconic painters again. But Boes street-meets-pop referenced work is something else entirely and given her reputation for rebellious, unconventional presentations via her gallery Ghettogloss (which made its mark in Silver Lake and currently has its HQ in Eagle Rock) questions have been raised amidst the art community. Is Costco's collaboration with a comparably unknown (compared to Warhol and Matisse, at least), very DIY-driven artist for real or is this all just a guerilla art stunt in the spirit of masters like Banksy and Boes' peer and pal Shepard Fairey?

Either way, Boes is deserving of the unique platform. Ghettogloss has been the launching pad for some of the most important exhibitions and cutting edge art movements in the past 15 years. With it's catalog art continuously being featured in films, television, and commercials, it is still a go-to art house for cutting edge art, but it has evolved from gallery and retail space into a secret laboratory of creation for Boes and her trusted contemporaries. On any given Sunday (and every other day of the week) you will find Fiora & her collaborators working feverishly on everything from design jobs to art commissions.

"There is no limit on what we can produce and the more diverse that the jobs become, the more our art is pushed to the next level of existing. It's such an exciting time and the sky is the limit." exclaims Boes. "The natural progression of having to create art and employing the tradition of collaboration as a means to self generate new markets is where Ghettogloss continues the conversation. "

While Boes' original intention for the Historic Conners Plumbing building in Eagle Rock was to continue exhibiting other artists' work, that was overruled by the compelling need to create. After a 20-year hiatus, Fiora's focus on her own fine art career has come to the forefront.

If the Costco collaboration (or infiltration) is the real deal and not the result of a hack publicity stunt, it wouldn't be that out of progression for Boes, who earned art world chops and accolades early in her career with creating and designing for corporate clients like the Hard Rock Hotel and Virgin Records.

Boes' still-burgeoning career as a creator versus curator has been on fire as of late. She's currently working on James Merendino's, "Punk's Dead" the highly anticipated sequel to "SLC PUNK," a film that she costume designed 15 years ago. Boes is designing the look of the film in its entirety, taking on both the roles of production designer and costume designer.

"I am excited to be able to create an all over visual for the film. I have been working with so many mediums and on such a large scale that visually it seems only natural to design the entire frame at this point," says Boes. "Combining costume and production design is like having my paintings come to life."

In the celebratory spirit of the pop-icon infused work seen on Costco.com (featuring unique takes on Warhol muse Marilyn Monroe and the beloved Princess Diana), Boes is currently planning another one of her famously unique presentations, for an equally beloved superstar persona: Bond, James Bond. "The Bond Exhibit" will mark the first collaborative collection of large-scale paintings with fellow Ghettogloss artist Yarrow Earth Hock. The grand opening black-tie event will take place in July of 2014 at a private residence in the Hollywood Hills.
