Andy Karl Recounts ROCKY's Rocky Road On Broadway
Legendary multi-Academy Award-winning big screen classic ROCKY hit Broadway this year in a new musical adaptation and the title star, Andy Karl, voices his candid opinion on his dedication to the role and the rocky road the show has endured on Broadway since opening earlier this year as part of a new essay.
Karl shares of the night he was informed the show would be closing on August 17, "The crowd is on their feet chanting as I take my bow in the boxing ring after 2½ hours on stage, ending with a full-contact, pulverizing 20-minute fight. This happens every night, but tonight was different. Tonight, we got our closing notice. My emotions are torn between hearing the roaring crowd and feeling the frustration. Sounds a little dramatic, but let me share my journey."
Commenting on his affinity for the part, Karl writes, "Something about this role was a good match for me. Rocky was in my bones. My callback was a slam dunk. I was hired for the first reading of "Rocky" and without so much as a set piece or an ounce of stage combat, the story of 'dignity, love and going the distance' resonated."
Additionally, Karl concludes, "I know, I know. It was always going to be a challenge to convince lovers of Broadway that Rocky would make sense as a musical. But I also know what I see every night ... and that is men, women, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, grandparents, boxers, teachers, military veterans, people of every kind on their feet cheering for Rocky."
