On May 18th, the 2023 Triangle Rising Star Awards took place through the Durham Performing Arts Center. This regional competition brings together high school musical theater students from Central and Eastern North Carolina to perform and compete for the chance to represent the Triangle in The National High School Musical Theater (otherwise known as The Jimmy) Awards in New York City on June 26th. The national competition celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions from all over the United States. Shortly after the Triangle Rising Star Awards, I had the great pleasure of interviewing both of this year's winners, Noah Colvin of Enloe High School and Lilly Pritchard of Heritage High School.

High School Musical the Musical the Series star and Broadway veteran Kate Reinders will return to the stage on Monday, June 27 to host the 2022 Jimmy Awards. 92 student nominees will perform for a chance to win the Jimmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Actress.

In just days, the nation's most talented teens will gather at the Minskoff Theatre to perform at the Jimmy Awards! This year, 92 nominees, coming from 46 high school musical theatre awards competitions across the U.S. will compete for the ultimate prizes of Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor award, as well as other honors and scholarships. 

It's been one year since Bryson Battle took center stage as a winner of the 12th annual Jimmy Awards. As a participant from Charlotte, North Carolina's Blumey Awards, Battle took part in the first ever virtual presentation on July 15, 2021, and was awarded Best Performance by an Actor, along with a check for $25,000 to further his education. BroadwayWorld is checking in with Bryson to catch up on what he's been up to since his big win, as well as advice for this year's participants.

Just last summer, Elena Holder's world was turned upside down when she was named a winner of the 12th annual Jimmy Awards. As a participant from Durham, North Carolina's Triangle Rising Stars, Holder took part in the first ever virtual presentation on July 15, 2021, and was awarded Best Performance by an Actress, along with a check for $25,000 to further her education.

The Jimmy Awards have just announced this year’s 92 nominees, coming from 46 high school musical theatre awards competitions across the U.S. The show will feature dynamic ensemble and solo performances and will culminate with the presentation of a Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor award, as well as other honors and scholarships. Winners will be chosen by a panel of industry experts.

Ian Sullivan is currently enrolled at Gardner-Webb for his master’s degree in Curriculum and Education. A writer, director, mask maker, and (sometimes) actor, Ian considers his primary role to be that of an educator and looks forward to continuing to grow the program at Hickory Ridge.

Jimmy Awards Inspiring Teacher Kristin Winchester believes in the power of storytelling, the ability to find oneself through artistic expression, and the importance of communication in everyday experience. She has created a rigorous curriculum, directed challenging productions, and has sent many students to BFA acting, musical theatre, and design programs across the country.
