Given that science-focused university Imperial College has its main campus just around the corner in the heart of Albertopolis, a Horrible Science Prom was very much overdue.

Amongst other things, art exists to try and explain the profound, channelling the artist’s thoughts and feelings into paintings, literature or, in this case, music. Death and what lies beyond is naturally a frequent topic, most often contemplated by creatives with decades behind them - not so for three out of four of the composers on this Prom’s programme. Lili Boulanger, Olivier Messiaen, and Richard Strauss were all in their early 20s when their selected pieces were composed; Karol Szymanowski, by contrast, was in his 40s. Yet each composition suggests a weight of emotion and experience beyond their years.

With artificial intelligence doing its best to inveigle its way into the arts, there’s no better antidote than a late night Prom showcasing some of the best loved songs from the late Renaissance and Baroque eras. Thomas Dunford’s Jupiter Ensemble was formed in 2018, and could not be more well placed to bring these compositions to life, as they are committed to performing both rarities and well-known numbers from across the breadth of history. Full of enthusiasm and with lute in hand, Dunford quickly established himself as our musical guide for the evening.
