La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre presents Celebración Flamenca, directed by Carolyn Holden

Performed by the La Rosa dancers
On Broadway - Cape Town
18 - 29 January 2011 (Tuesdays - Saturdays)
8:30pm nightly

After a highly successful run of Celebración Flamenca at Oude Libertas in Stellenbosch in December 2010, La Rosa, South Africa's most established Spanish dance company, will be extending their 20th anniversary celebrations with a season at On Broadway. Swirling skirts, castanets and a passionate display of Flamenco dancing, rhythms and sounds are what audiences have come to expect from La Rosa and Celebración Flamenca is no exception.

This dynamic dance production is directed by Carolyn Holden who has consistently been presenting audiences with innovative, slick and passionate dance productions since 1990 when she founded the organisation. In Celebración Flamenca, Holden has restaged established repertoire in a new creative context, resulting in a visual feast of Contemporary Flamenco. The production features choreography by Holden and by the Madrid-based choreographers Joaquin Ruiz, La Truco, Domingo Ortega and the late Javier Cruz.

Celebración Flamenca features the cream of La Rosa's dancers accompanied by a musical ensemble including the highly acclaimed Flamenco guitarist, Bienyameen, Robert Jeffery (of the rock group Flat Stanley) on guitar and cello, Heather Roth on flute, Robert Davids and Nkosinathi Figlan on cajón, accompanied by South Africa's own cantaora, Loreán Swartz,

La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre is a platform for students of Spanish dance to perform their chosen art form on a regular basis and at a professional level via the company. Continuous and increasingly frequent performances in and around Cape Town and at arts and dance festivals across the country have established La Rosa as one of the foremost exponents of this dance discipline. The organisation has also been involved in education and skills development initiatives since 1997, focusing on making flamenco accessible to the youth, developing the artistic and technical skills of potential professionals and growing audiences across the broader socio-economic spectrum.

Flamenco was recently acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Intangible Heritage and La Rosa's work in South Africa over the past 20 years has contributed to making this rich art form a staple of the South African cultural landscape.

This production has been made possible with the support of the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund, the National Arts Council, Breadline Africa, the City of Cape Town, and the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports.

Performances run Tuesdays to Saturdays at On Broadway on 44 Long Street from 18 to 29 January at 8:30pm and tickets cost R95.00 via Computicket or 021 424 1194 or www.onbroadway.co.za.
