Goodman Theatre’s Centennial 25/26 Season will continue with Holiday, adapted by the late Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Richard Greenberg in a contemporary reimagining of Philip Barry’s classic Roaring Twenties love story

The creators of PERFECT WORLD discuss how the true story of a brilliant young novelist who vanished in 1939 became the inspiration for their new musical, playing Nov. 1-9 at the El Portal Theatre.

At Teatro VillaLobos, the Broadway classic takes on a new life under the direction and choreography of Bárbara Guerra, who updates the visuals with large screens and real-time projections without losing the soul of the original, with a fine-tuned cast that delivers moving performances in numbers like 'At the Ballet' and 'What I Did for Love'. Metalinguistic and vibrant, the production celebrates the dreams, pain, and persistence of those who live to dance.

Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center will host a three-night event series this fall featuring Aphorisms: A Tribute to Ursula Mamlok with New Chamber Ballet and a Momenta Quartet tribute to Stefan Wolpe and John Cage. Presented in conjunction with Points in Space: Performance at Black Mountain College, the programs celebrate the College’s lasting impact on dance and music.

The benefit of a stage production means it will always be malleable to change, always willing to look at how a story written in the past can still be relevant in the present, and remain timeless for the future. What follows in this new production of The Wiz is a recontextualization of our favorite characters. While the structure of the story is faithful to the Baum novel and MGM film, it comes with small, but noticeable details that reframe this familiar story not just as a fantastical quest, but as a bildungsroman and revenge tale at the same time.

Almost forty years ago, in 1987, I happened to be sent on a training course in Melbourne, when Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Cats, had its run in Sydney and been transferred to Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, and I took advantage of the opportunity to buy a ticket to see the performance.

The Wiz premiered on Broadway 50 years ago, but you would never guess that the show is that old by watching the current production at the Springer Opera House. The energetic cast and wondrous visuals breathe fresh life into the play and make The Wiz compelling from start to finish.
