Trumpet icon Herb Alpert and Grammy Award-winning vocalist/producer Lani Hall return to Café Carlyle performing new and classic songs, November 19-30. At 84 years old, Herb Albert is still at the top of his game. Alpert played with the confidence of someone with nothing to prove, and nothing to gain besides the pure love of the music, and seeing his fans' faces light up. He's a jazz legend, and he's still growing as a musician, but he doesn't act like playing the old standbys is beneath him. At one point he said that he performs these concerts because a?oewhen I play the songs, it puts me in the moment of my life [when I first performed them], and it puts you back too, and it's a beautiful thing.a??

The title of Andy Statman's CD, inspired by Bill Monroe, may be Monroe Bus, but we are really on the 'Statman Bus' -- with the spirit of Bill Monroe riding shotgun. Be sure to buckle up -- with Statman at the wheel on musical highways, it's hard to keep the bus in a single lane.

Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2016 Popular Song series at the Appel Room ended this year's agenda on June 8 with host Michael Feinstein's appreciation of the interconnection between swing and popular song, a subject about which he's clearly enthusiastic. Each musical era, he suggests, is previewed by a song marking change: “Alexander's Ragtime Band” ushered in ragtime, “Sing, Sing Sing,” prefaced swing, “Rock Around the Clock” heralded rock n' roll. With the able assistance of Musical Director Tedd Firth (also on piano), Firth's Big Band, and special guest vocalists Allyson Briggs, Jeremy Jordan, and Catherine Ross, Feinstein and Co. delivered a lively evening of familiar and eclectic material.

For theatre lovers in our area, we always look forward to what our theatre companies have in store for us in their upcoming seasons. We look to see if there are any trends that stand out to us as audience members. We also see growth in many companies with each new season of shows. Anyone that's been following DC theatre for a while will notice how things have changed in the last twenty or thirty years. One of the biggest examples of this would be the clean up and revitalization of 14th Street, which had direct implications for Studio Theatre and Source.

Behold, a rare gem, a piece of art that combines two vastly different disciplines: theater, and math. Ironically, what makes David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning play, 'Proof' so entertaining isn't so much the math, but the chemistry between the characters. Get out your pens and pencils, students, because Strawberry Theatre Workshop's harmonious performances are noteworthy.

Bennett Chotard's new book, Full Bellies Hungry Souls ($10.99, paperback, 9781498464963; $5.99, eBook, 9781498464970) has the potential to begin real, honest transformation that has previously been beyond our grasp. With the holiday season in full swing, it's not surprising that a wonderfully iconic show would come through San Antonio, Texas just in time for Christmas. Irving Berlin's WHITE CHRISTMAS is everything you would hope to see in this classic movie brought to stage in 2017. As the show began, the music of years gone by played by the orchestra led you straight back to the days that are long gone and long forgotten. WHITE CHRISTMAS was a chance to feel the nostalgia for simpler times and memories of loved ones and celebrated with growing up.
