In 'Dances to American Music' at the Joyce Theatre, Morris pays tribute to regional American music.

Thanks to a serious discussion wrought by the end, the play avoids being a mere entertainment. The characters are not merely competing, ruthlessly but wittily too, for whatever prizes journalism may have to offer, but are visibly debasing their souls to win those prizes, and with their souls, part of what made the American soul. It may be entertaining to watch, but it’s uncomfortable entertainment, more jeremiad than amusement.

Perhaps the biggest change was the audience. In the 1980s, AC/DC was the rebellious band parents warned their children about. Now, the band is the spectacle parents bring their children to experience. It was a little unnerving to hear a mother asking, “Timmy, would you like a cookie?” before the band opened with “If You Want Blood, You’ve Got It.”

In the end, this is not so much of a takedown of one specific person as of a way of being a person. To shrink down to that person’s size is to lose out on life. In this good and carefully-written play, D’Amour makes that clear.
