Based on the 1988 John Waters' movie that became a cult classic, Hairspray opened on Broadway in 2002. It took home eight Tony Award wins, including Best Musical. Its staying power can be credited to a memorable score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and relatable themes in the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan.
