After over a decade away, Mamma Mia! is back on Broadway where it belongs! The show begins previews later this week at the Winter Garden Theatre, and while we await the Dynamos' first return performance, it's the perfect time to recap the music that inspired the show and how it keeps the story going.  ​

Musicals at Richter (MAR), celebrating its 41st season as the longest-running outdoor theater in Connecticut, kicks off the summer with 'Evita,' playing July 5 to July 19. Featuring a live band and a cast of talented local actors, performances take place outdoors under the stars at the Richter Arts Center

This is the premise of the current production at the Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre. Chicago native Sandy Ruskin’s Always Something There…, a Peggy Got Sue Got Married/Back to the Future, etc. styled tribute to the 1980’s, is having its world premiere at the Marriott. It is about being able to go back, reliving your life and changing those horrible choices you made in your teen years.

Just In Time’s origin story as well as overall conceit has much in common with one of Broadway’s very first jukebox musicals, which was ahead of its time. Robinson’s adaptation sticks to the development of the characters and deletes some unnecessary filler. Set in Nina Ball’s excellently appointed 5 & Dime during a drought, the once thriving town is now a dried-up skeleton, and the women brought together for their reunion are all caught up in the divergence between present realities and memories of 1955.

Second Stage Theatre’s 43rd Street off-Broadway house, right near 8th Avenue, recently changed hands and is now the home of Studio Seaview . Seaview’s first production in the space is Angry Alan, starring John Krasinski. They have renovated and updated the space since Second Stage switched off-Broadway locations to now present shows at the Signature.
