Sarasota Film Festival Announces Opening and Closing Night Films

The Sarasota Film Festival today announced Rory Kennedy's documentary TAKE EVERY WAVE: THE LIFE OF LAIRD HAMILTON as its Opening Night film and Eleanor Coppola's PARIS CAN WAIT starring Diane Lane as its Closing Night film. It also announced Michael Almereyda's MARJORIE PRIME and Barbara Kopple's documentary THIS IS EVERYTHING: GIGI GORGEOUS as its Centerpiece films, a special screening of Jill Campbell's documentary MR. CHIBBS focused on the life of former NBA star Kenny Anderson produced by President of Coastal Transportation Barry Greenstein, and Aisha Tyler's AXIS as part of the Independent Visions Competition.
Asolo Rep presents THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY

Asolo Rep continues its record-breaking 2017-18 season with Kristoffer Diaz's THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY, a 2010 Pulitzer Prize Finalist and the 2011 Obie Award-winner for Best New American Play. Directed by Jen Wineman, who previously helmed the educational touring productions of Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream for Asolo Rep and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY previews April 4, 5 and 6, opens April 7 and runs through April 30. The play will be performed in the Cook Theatre, which will be transformed into a full-scale wrestling arena complete with two ringside seating sections to bring audiences even closer to the action.

Kristin Chenoweth has rescheduled her Sarasota performance An Intimate Evening with Kristin Chenoweth due to a scheduling conflict. The performance was originally set for Sunday, March 12 at 7PM. The rescheduled date is Thursday, April 6th at 8PM.
6th Annual POETRYLIFE Weekend Comes to FST Ths April

2017 marks the 6th Anniversary of PoetryLife weekend, bringing together nationally recognized poets, students, teachers, and community members all in one place to celebrate the art of the written word. Events will take place in FST's Bowne's Lab and Keating Theatre. Special guest poets Edward Hirsh and Aimee Nezhukumatathil will be participating in this year's PoetryLife Weekend. For a full list of events, please see below. Proceeds for this weekend go to benefit The PoetryLife Fund, a support for educators teaching poetry in the community. Sarasota Film Festival Launches Veteran's Filmmaking Academy With Their First Documentary Short RETURNING

The Sarasota Film Festival  announces the launch of their newly established Veteran's Filmmaking Academy completed in collaboration with Project Rebirth. Local veteran's Rae Chapman, Eddie Cacciola, Mike Scelia and Jeff Garner participated in making the first documentary short RETURNING with instruction from Shaun Greenspan and Ed Fagan of Triforce Pictures and Director Jason Benjamin (SUITED).  The film will make its world premiere at this years festival at the Sarasota Opera House on Tuesday, April 4th at 6:30PM.

The Bridges of Madison County is a drama about romance and infidelity that gives us a glimpse into the lives of Francesca Johnson (Dianne Dawson), an Italian war-bride from Naples, her Veteran husband Bud, (Cory Woomert), an Iowa farmer, and her lover Robert Kincaid, (Charles Dugan), a photographer on assignment photographing the covered bridges of Madison County for National Geographic. Robert pulls up looking for directions to the one last bridge he needs to complete his mission; just minutes after Francesca's husband and their two teenagers are out the door to the county fair for several days.

The story is a spectacle representing a troupe of actors performing in a play about a young prince named Pippin, (Naysh Fox), in an anguishing search for his life's purpose. As his character comes to life, Pippin meets an odd array of circus-type characters along the way.

A Communication Forum, sponsored by the Westcoast Black Theatre titled WBTT Voices, recently spotlighted Brenda Watty, fifteen-year member of The Marvelettes. Watty spent five years in the 60's girl group, The Toys, singing lead vocals on the hit, Lovers Concerto. As a member of Musique she scored another hit titled, Push Push in the Bush. Her management company, Banner Talent, then secured an audition for her as lead vocalist with the Marvelettes, and for the next 15 years she stayed and toured with the group.

There is a lot to be said about anything that lasts 60 years these days. Eleanor Merritt has been painting in all types of medias for that period of time. The recent showing of her artistry highlights her journey as we stand before each piece and marvel at her artistic growth, diversity of techniques and brilliant use of colors and textures. Two favorites that stood out were a painting of her grandmother and a homage to her mother, an infusion of brush strokes and materials.

In its 58th season, the enchanting Asolo Repertory Theatre hit the ball out of the park with its staging of Born Yesterday. Many will remember the 1950 film version staring Broderick Crawford as Harry Brock, the controlling, corrupt business tycoon, playing sugar daddy to love interest Billie Dawn, portrayed by Judy Holliday. Miss Holliday was honored with an Academy Award for Best Actress, reprising her role from the 1946 Broadway production by Garson Kanin.
