PlayGround's 25th Season Continues With Two World Premieres

PlayGround has announced highlights of its 25th Season, including two world premieres to be featured in this year's PlayGround Festival and its return to New York for a 25th Season Gala Performance. The world premieres, Katie May's A HISTORY OF FREAKS and Ruben Grijalva's ANNA CONSIDERS MARS, were both developed at past PlayGround Festivals. Anna Considers Mars is a PlayGround/Planet Earth Arts co-commission. The productions open May 15 and May 22, respectively, and will run in rotating repertory as part of PlayGround's annual new plays showcase, the PlayGround Festival of New Works, through June 16 at PlayGround's state-of-the-art San Francisco home, Potrero Stage. On April 15, PlayGround will celebrate its 25th Anniversary New York-style with a special one-night only Monday Night PlayGround "Musical Theatre" Gala Performance at Theatre Row's Beckett Theatre on 42nd Street, featuring plays and performances by PlayGround alumni and other distinguished guests. Hillbarn Theatre Conservatory Presents URINETOWN

Conservatory Directory Randy O'Hara announced today that youth actors from the Hillbarn Conservatory will present the Tony Award-winning musical, Urinetown. Featuring music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann with book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, Urinetown will perform March 29 31, 2019 at Hillbarn Theatre (1285 East Hillsdale Blvd., Foster City). The performance schedule is as follows: Friday, March 29, Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31 at 7 p.m.
MAN OF LA MANCHA to Feature in Concert in SF With Grammy Winning Brazilian Pianist Eliane Elias

At the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco on Thursday, March 7, Grammy winning Brazilian singer and pianist Elias performs songs from her previously unreleased 1995 album devoted to composer Mitch Leigh's Tony-winning score to the Broadway hit Man of La Mancha. This concert kicks off Elias' four-night residency.

Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson's The Sleeping Beauty returns to San Francisco Ballet on March 9 with performances through March 17 at SF War Memorial Opera House. Tomasson's staging, which premiered with the Company in 1990, updates Marius Petipa's original choreography from 1890, which debuted at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Jeremy Julian Greco brings Keeping Up with the Jorgensons to the Whitefire Theatre's Solofest 2019 for just one performance, Today, February 21st, 8 pm. In this presentation, Greco recounts a childhood road trip to Orange County, CA to attend the wedding of a relative he's never met. Asked to tickle his father's feet and sleep in his grandmother's bed, the young Greco finds he will say and do anything to secure a visit to the happiest place on Earth: Disneyland. He has performed this work to sold-out crowds at The United Solo Theatre Festival, the Nugget Fringe Theater Festival, and the 2017 San Francisco Fringe Festival, where it won Best of the San Francisco Fringe, and most recently had an eight show run at the Marsh Theater in San Francisco. The Huffington Post said of the show, "a delightful hour of mirth mixed with adolescent angst brought on by a cast of characters that make All in the Family, Roseanne, and Married…with Children seem a bit too Disneyfied."

The Marsh San Francisco announces the return of its 2017 hit, The Mushroom Cure by Adam Strauss. Inspired by a scientific study that hallucinogenic mushrooms may cure obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Strauss embarked on a program of vigilante psychopharmacology. The true tale of Strauss' hilarious, harrowing, and heartrending attempts to treat his debilitating OCD with psychedelics was an Off-Broadway hit, where it was named Critics' Pick by Time Out New York and hailed by The New York Times as "mining a great deal of laughter from disabling pain" before moving to San Francisco for an extended run. The Mushroom Cure will be presented March 16 - 30, 2019 with performances 8:30pm Saturdays and 5:30pm Sundays at The Marsh San Francisco, 1062 Valencia St., San Francisco. Called 'an oasis of good-natured ribbing in a fiercely partisan world' by The Washington Post, the Capitol Steps have slayed the country with their hilarious send-up of the people and institutions that once employed them. Their sketch and improvisational comedy offers a mix of song and standup, lampooning modern political leaders, and tackling major current issues.
