Review: THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION at Town Players Of New Canaan
by Pia Haas - June 23, 2025
For many, the mention of The Shawshank Redemption instantly recalls the iconic 1994 film that brought Stephen King’s novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, to life. Etched into the American consciousness, it’s a slow-burn tale of cruelty, resilience, and—ultimately—hope.
Review: AFTER-PLAY Is Back on Stage, at YCP TheaterWorks
by Bruce Apar - June 20, 2025
How are conversations about death humorous? Ah, leave it to a trouper like Anne Meara to turn that trick, and she does so quite craftily. In this production, she is abetted by a strongly committed cast and director to bring her vision home with impact.

In the confident and craftsmanlike hands of Mr. Dudzick and director Joe Brancato, the audience is treated to a breezy look at familial relations that is smartly informed by the writer’s abiding sense of balance between lighthearted banter and matters of faith, ambition, tolerance and family secrets that surface and hit home with the force of a torpedo, shattering a lifetime of misbegotten beliefs.

Review: POPS GOT CHOPS: 'SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF' IS A WONDERFUL ONE-MAN SHOW at Schoolhouse Theater
by Bruce Apar - May 31, 2025
The tightly produced, crisply presented piece directed by Schoolhouse Producing Director Bram Lewis stars Wali Jamal in a thoroughly engaging and formidable performance that also profiles Mr. Armstrong’s lifelong manager Mr. Joe Glaser and another deity straight from the Mount Olympus of jazz, Mr. Miles Davis. Mr. Jamal skillfully presents the three as distinct personalities without overdoing it. He represents them rather than impersonates them, which is a wise choice because there only is one sun in this universe and it is the one and only Satchmo.

In it's landmark 40th season, The Schoolhouse Theater hits a high note with 'Satchmo at the Waldorf.' It is a bold and emotional one-man show that digs into the life and legacy of jazz legend Louis Armstrong. Written by Terry Teachout, the play imagines Armstrong backstage at the Waldorf-Astoria near the end of his life, reflecting on his career, his struggles, and the complicated relationships that shaped him—especially with his longtime manager Joe Glaser and fellow jazz icon Miles Davis.
