Today, today, BroadwayWorld is absolutely thrilled to present this World Premiere Exclusive clip from the 50th Anniversary Special Edition DVD/Blu-ray of WEST SIDE STORY - in stores today - in which Stephen Sondheim discusses his compositional process in working with Leonard Bernstein on the ROMEO & JULIET-based musical tragedy. Believe it or not, the melody that became 'One Hand, One Heart' actually began as a tune composed for Bernstein's CANDIDE, but, with Sondheim's smart suggestion (and parody lyric), Bernstein transformed the melody into something even grander - and infinitely more sing-able - and, married with Sondheim's simple and elegant lyrics, made it into the classic love song for the ages we all know and cherish. Additionally, the song has remained a standout of the score and was introduced to a new generation last Tuesday when Lea Michele and Darren Criss performed it on GLEE (as well as many other WEST SIDE STORY standards). Some love songs live forever and this is undoubtedly one of them - for very good reason!
In tonight's episode of FOX's GLEE, the kids prepare for opening night of the school musical, and several of them contemplate taking the next step with their significant other.
