The St. Louis Theatre Circle has announced their nominations for their annual awards to be distributed on March 23, 2026, at the Loretto-Hilton Center. 172 theatre artists have been nominated in 34 categories honoring the best in St. Louis Theater in 2025. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis leads all companies with a record-breaking 38 nominations for their productions of Athena, Clyde’s, Emma, Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Brothers Size, and The Cottage. Emma is the most nominated comedy of the season with 11 nominations.

This past season was the year of the comedy in St. Louis Theater. Companies across the city had audiences laughing all season long with slapstick, farce, and satire. There were some wonderful musical productions that really sang, a few hard hitting dramas, but comedies reigned in both quantity and quality. Instead of publishing a Top 10 list this year, I’m going to recognize the Best in St. Louis Theater for 2025. “The Best” is still a shortened list of just 13 shows out of the nearly 90 shows I saw this past year. It took weeks of thought and painstaking consideration to decide which productions would be included in my annual list. Here they are. The productions are listed in alphabetical order, not ranked by favorites:

Who knew going to church could be this dramatic? Well, maybe we all had a hunch, but Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock is taking Central Arkansas to church, both literally and figuratively, now through August 24th with The Amen Corner by the legendary James Baldwin.

We spoke to Essence Anisa Tyler about St. Louis Rep's productiuon of Lynn Nottage's Clyde's, running now through March 2nd at the Loretto-Hilton Center on the Webster University Campus. 

This moving piece of theater, which features an extremely talented ensemble, is an uplifting, and terse story about resilience, community, and the importance of finding joy in the most unexpected places.

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis will present the St. Louis premiere of Clyde's, the Tony-nominated hit by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage, running February 5 – March 3, 2025, at the Loretto-Hilton Center on the campus of Webster University.

The Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) produced the world premiere of Charles Fuller’s Obie Award-winning play, “Zooman and the Sign,” 44 years ago at Theater Four on West 55th Street.  Now The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc., in cooperation with Penn Live Arts, is reviving the play for contemporary New York audiences June 27 to July 7 at American Theatre of Actors (ATA), 314 W. 54th Street, directed by Phyllis Yvonne Stickney. What did our critic think of CLYDE'S at Arkansas Repertory Theatre? Y’all! Never have I ever wanted to hang out with criminals as much as I did while watching CLYDE’S at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, 601 Main St, in Little Rock, which is being performed now through June 25th. Direct from Broadway, CLYDE’S is a new play by Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage and Directed by Josiah Davis. This play will make you laugh, your heart will hurt a little, and you will leave hungry even if you already ate before you got there.  

Alabama Shakespeare Festival presents the Tony Award-nominated comedy Clyde's, opening May 12 and running through May 28 on the Octagon Stage in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative and Arkansas Repertory Theatre.
