Jennifer Jason Leigh is an American actress who has made a name for herself in both film and theater. Born on February 5, 1962, in Hollywood, California, Leigh was exposed to the entertainment industry at a young age. Her father was an actor and her mother was a screenwriter. Leigh began acting in school plays and eventually made her way to the stage.
Leigh's Broadway debut came in 1998 when she starred in the revival of "Cabaret." She played the role of Sally Bowles, a role made famous by Liza Minnelli. Leigh received critical acclaim for her performance and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
In addition to her work on Broadway, Leigh has also appeared in several off-Broadway productions. In 2001, she starred in "Proof" at the Manhattan Theatre Club. The play was a critical and commercial success and earned Leigh an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actress.
Leigh's film career began in the early 1980s with small roles in films such as "The Young Runaways" and "Eyes of a Stranger." She gained critical acclaim for her performance in the 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Leigh played the role of Stacy Hamilton, a high school student who deals with the pressures of teenage life.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Leigh continued to work in film, appearing in movies such as "Single White Female," "Dolores Claiborne," and "Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle." In 1995, Leigh received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Hudsucker Proxy."
Leigh's most iconic film role came in 1990 when she played the lead in "Miami Blues." She played the role of Susie Waggoner, a prostitute who gets involved with a career criminal played by Alec Baldwin. The film was a critical success and helped establish Leigh as a serious actress.
In addition to her work in film and theater, Leigh has also appeared in several television shows. In 2005, she played the role of Jill Jerard in the Showtime series "Weeds." She also had a recurring role on the ABC series "Twin Peaks" in 2017.
Leigh has also worked as a voice actress, lending her voice to several animated films and television shows. In 2006, she provided the voice for the character of Mrs. Calloway in the Disney film "Home on the Range."
From 2017 to 2021, she starred in the Netflix comedy-drama series Atypical, while featuring in the science fiction films Annihilation (2018) and Possessor (2020). She has since starred in the fifth season of the crime drama series Fargo (2023).
