It seems fitting that Goodman Theatre opens new Artistic Director Susan V. Booth’s inaugural season with THE NACIREMA SOCIETY, a play that’s about coming out to society. This Chicago premiere marks a continuation of Booth’s long-standing relationship with celebrated Black playwright Pearl Cleage. THE NACIREMA SOCIETY takes the form of an extended farce, following the incredibly wealthy Dunbar family in 1964 Montgomery, Alabama. In this light-hearted (if not always legitimately laugh-out-loud) comedic play, Cleage draws heavily from classic farce conventions. As the centennial event of matriarch Grace Dubose Dunbar’s beloved Nacirema Society, Montgomery’s organization for Black young women, dawns — and she awaits her own granddaughter Grace’s coming out — the antics become more and more heightened as family secrets come to light.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater Artistic Director Barbara Gaines cleverly marries play and production concept in THE COMEDY OF ERRORS for her final production.

BARD AT THE GATE will launch its 3rd season on October 19 with the premiere of Laura Schellhardt’s play SHAPESHIFTER, with an opening night pre-show Zoom party hosted by the digital theater series’ creator, Paula Vogel at 7 pm, followed by a performance of the play online starting at 7:30 pm.

Four plays by women – including a solo work written and performed by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo – will be featured in the third season of BARD AT THE GATE, the digital theater streaming series created by Paula Vogel in 2020.

DC’s Studio Theatre is known as a leading contemporary theater, and the subject matter of its current production can scarcely be more so. Inspired by the police killing of young Michael Brown in 2014 in Ferguson, Mo., and based on dozens of interviews conducted in its aftermath across the city’s communities by playwright Dael Orlandersmith, Under the Flood goes beyond any specific such shooting to explore African American-White relations on a much-broader and emotionally charged scale. The anger and mistrust, the occasional ties of friendship. Personal success and failure amidst social upheaval.

In his directorial debut at Studio Theatre, Associate Artistic Director Reginald L. Douglas has reimagined Pulitzer Prize finalist Dael Orlandersmith’s Until the Flood as an ensemble piece for a multigenerational cast of Black women that captures how tragedy in one community became a flashpoint for racial justice across the United States.

Season of Concern, the emergency fund for Chicago theater artists, is thrilled to announce it will co-produce a virtual production of Fefu and Her Friends, Cuban-American playwright María Irene Fornés' feminist masterwork, in partnership with much-admired Chicago theater artist Mary Beth Fisher.

The Cape Cod Theatre Project presents the second play of its four play benefit season with The Hystericals by veteran playwright's Edith Freni (Total Power Exchange, Buena Vista), directed by Jessica Holt (Magic Theatre, Yale School of Drama).
