Gerard Butler's career spans a wide range of genres, from historical epics and action films to musicals and animation. After initially studying law, Butler shifted his focus to acting in the mid-1990s, beginning with small roles in film and television before steadily building an international screen career.
Early in his film work, Butler appeared in productions such as Mrs Brown, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Tale of the Mummy, before gaining early leading attention as Count Dracula in Dracula 2000. He followed this with prominent roles including Attila the Hun in the miniseries Attila and appearances in films such as Reign of Fire, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, and Timeline. In 2004, he starred as Erik, the Phantom, in Joel Schumacher’s film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.
Butler achieved widespread recognition with his portrayal of King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s 300, a performance that established him as a leading figure in action cinema. He later became a recurring presence in the genre through the Has Fallen film series, while also taking on roles in films such as Coriolanus, Machine Gun Preacher, Geostorm, Den of Thieves, Greenland, and Plane. In addition to his live-action work, he has lent his voice to the How to Train Your Dragon franchise since 2010.
Alongside acting, Butler has worked as a producer on several of his projects, maintaining a career that balances large-scale studio films with character-driven roles across film and television.
