Review: MOZART’S THE MAGIC FLUTE at The Metropolitan Opera
by Gabby Ziccarelli - Dec 12, 2025

As the houselights dim at the Metropolitan Opera, the Julie Taymor–directed The Magic Flute transports viewers into a buoyant and kaleidoscopic fairy-tale dreamworld. This abridged, English-language production is a visually sumptuous version of Mozart's singspiel bathed in bold primary colors, shaped by ingenious Masonic-inspired geometric staging, and animated by exquisite puppetry.

Review: PORGY AND BESS at Kennedy Center
by David Friscic - May 27, 2025

The pivotal and star-crossed main characters and the Catfish Row community come alive in the highly influential, thought-provoking, and engrossing opera Porgy and Bess. This much discussed opera has its partisans and detractors but there is a distinct need to ponder and consider a work of this quality. This Washington National Opera production beautifully melds content and form in this story of a crippled man (Porgy) who must travel the lonely road (“When Gawd make cripple, He means him to be lonely. Night time, day time, He got to travel that lonesome road.”) to find wholeness with the easily gratified yet complex and caring Bess.

An evening of the myriad modes of music that constitute the American Experience was celebrated at the Kennedy Center’s production of American Rhapsody. Critics are raving about Opera Theater of St. Louis’ (OTSL) production of THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, calling it riotously funny and dazzling with comedic brilliance. Tenor Andrew Morstein is making his OSTL debut and sings the role of Count Almaviva. His comedic performance has been called virtuosic, lyrically beautiful, and vocally acrobatic. Morstein, who is a rising international opera star, sat down with Broadway World to talk about his experience with the Rossini opera, the current production at the Loretto-Hilton Center, and what he is doing with his time in St. Louis.

Review: SONGBIRD at Kennedy Center
by Roger Catlin - Mar 12, 2024

There’s an awful lot of death in opera, Timothy O’Leary, the general director of Washington National Opera, lamented on a recent opening night. And those plentiful tragedies are also often further burdened with overbearing scores, turgid storylines, super-large casts and strident if not shrill performances.

Review: Oh Goddess, Bellini's NORMA Returns to the Met
by Richard Sasanow - Mar 11, 2023

You’ve got to admit that the Met had a lot of guts to dedicate this season’s performances of Vincenzo Bellini’s NORMA (libretto by Felice Romani) to the memory of Maria Callas on the 100th anniversary of her birth. Hers was simply one of the most legendary portrayals of the role, by a fabled singer. Period. But Yoncheva--and her costars--pulled off the performance with aplomb and made the Met audience very happy indeed.
