Lyric closes out their Civic Center season with HAMILTON mega-star Lin-Manuel Miranda's initial hit musical, the Tony-winning IN THE HEIGHTS. Premiering on Broadway in 2008, this depiction of the flavorful New York City neighborhood at the top of Manhattan paints a vivid and delightful portrait of the struggles and celebrations of everyday Americans. IN THE HEIGHTS is an exciting capstone to Lyric's wildly successful summer season…don't miss it! (more...)

BWW Review: WEST SIDE STORY At Lyric Theatre Brings Surprising And Profound Depth Alongside Exquisite Dancing BWW Review: WEST SIDE STORY At Lyric Theatre Brings Surprising And Profound Depth Alongside Exquisite Dancing
by Ronn Burton on July 27, 2017 in Oklahoma

This updated retelling of Romeo and Juliet is set in 1950s New York City, yet its themes of racism and hatred of anything deemed "different" ring especially true in today's political climate, sadly. WEST SIDE STORY is a compelling reminder of just how much hatred, prejudice, and ignorance can destroy what we all hold so dear. One of Lyric's most fully realized productions I can think of in recent memory…do yourself a favor and allow the message of this piece to penetrate your heart and mind - for truly great art has the power to influence the world. BWW Review: Lyric Theatre's DISNEY'S WHEN YOU WISH Brings Must-See Magic to the Civic Center BWW Review: Lyric Theatre's DISNEY'S WHEN YOU WISH Brings Must-See Magic to the Civic Center
by Robert Barossi on July 12, 2017 in Oklahoma

It's undeniable that just saying the word 'Disney' conjures up an instant image, thought or feeling in a person's mind and maybe heart as well. The world created by Walt Disney has become a worldwide empire spanning everything from amusement parks to movies to merchandise of all kinds. Much of that involves iconic and beloved characters, many from beloved animated movies. The movies and their characters have been around a long time and are instantly recognizable. But if you thought you could never experience them in an entirely new and different way, Lyric Theatre is here to prove you wrong. Their production of Disney's When You Wish takes those magical movie moments and brings them to life in an entirely spectacular new way. (more...)

BWW Review: The Bethany Stage's GUYS AND DOLLS Features Stand-Out Performances BWW Review: The Bethany Stage's GUYS AND DOLLS Features Stand-Out Performances
by Ronn Burton on July 01, 2017 in Oklahoma

The Bethany Stage, a relatively new theatre company in the Oklahoma City metro area, presented their first musical production, GUYS AND DOLLS. Let me assure you, the beloved score is in capable hands: the four leads of the show carry the show nicely. Artistic Director Audra Faust has led this fledgling theatre company to a successful first musical production, and I look forward to more from her group of players. (more...)

BWW Review: Lyric Theatre's MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Is A Rock-n-Roll Hit You Can Bank On BWW Review: Lyric Theatre's MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Is A Rock-n-Roll Hit You Can Bank On
by Ronn Burton on June 28, 2017 in Oklahoma

Lyric Theatre kicks off its summer season with this rollicking concert of golden oldies - the finale medley alone is worth the price of admission, but Lyric's production serves up nearly two hours worth of your favorite songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis. Tried-and-true hits like "Blue Suede Shoes", "Great Balls Of Fire", "Fever", "Hound Dog" and many more each get their moment in the spotlight. These performers are musicians first and foremost, and it shows. Yet none of them fall into the trap of impersonations…each actor brings his character to life with a crisp vitality that keeps the show nimble and appealing. (more...)

So, as we say in show business, 'That's a Wrap!' The dizzying creative and emotional 'hangover' of what transpired in Broken Arrow and Tulsa, Oklahoma, last week, is still lingering... whether it's the students or the faculty. We have all been in constant communication, continuing to be in awe of what actually happened to ALL of us, between June 11 to 17. The work week was intense, long, and difficult, but the rewards and what we all got back, did more than make up for it. (more...)
