Daughters Of Troy Presents STROKE VAGINA

By:

Daughters of Troy announces a reading of Stroke Vagina, a new play by Nilsa Reyna. The reading features Ashley Candelaria, Bryan Cortes, Nina Simisterra and Liz Mattera. The reading will be directed by Daphnie Sicre. Stroke Vagina will be presented March 23rd at 7:30 PM at the Dramatist Guild Foundation Music Hall. Tickets are free and doors open at 7:15 PM.

Stroke Vagina tells the story of a weary medical administrative assistant/actress who suffers a stroke and must learn to care for herself. Reyna wrote the play after suffering a series of strokes in May of 2012. While recovering, she began documenting her story, which also served as both physical and emotional therapy. As the pages kept coming, she was inspired to dramatize her story for the stage.

"Daughters of Troy is passionate about championing female artists and stories," remarked Artistic Producer Brooke M. Haney. "I've admired Daphnie Sicre as a director for a couple of years, so I asked her to help us find a playwright whose work she was really passionate about." When asked about why this show is crucial now, Sicre said "in the Latinx community we have a hard time talking about health. Even harder when it is about the matriarch of the family. Nilsa's play is very personal, but at the same time shedding light on a very important health issue. We need more plays that talk about our health as women, for us, for everyone."

Daughters of Troy is a female-focused company of theatre and visual artists led by Aubrey Saverino and Brooke M. Haney in partnership with international art organization RE:ARTISTE. We use classical text, visual art, music, dance, poetry and storytelling to create theatrical installations inspired by archetypes in mythology and folklore. We believe that the collision of art and theatre can illuminate these ancient stories in unique and exciting ways that reflect our current society, and foster discourse and connection in our communities. Since its official inception in 2016, Daughters of Troy has been granted two artist residencies on Governors Island through Barton Booth's Make Room Initiative, developed seven short plays-- several of which were presented at Dixon Place in November 2016, and worked with over two dozen visual and performing artists from all over the world.
