Matrix School of Theatre Seeks Students Beginning September

Join Matrix School of Theatre this September as youth learn to become playwrights, producers and performers of their own work! Classes begin September 19 meeting each Tuesday from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm, and culminate in a showcase performance December 12. Budding Artists (Ages 5 - 7), Young Artists (Ages 8 - 10), and Junior Company (Ages 11 - 14) all meet at Matrix Theatre, 2730 Bagley in the heart of southwest Detroit's Mexicantown. Call 313 967 0999, ext. 3 or register online at matrixtheatre.org.

Director of Education Colleen Cartwright shared that professional artists-in-residence will guide a highly engaging process that leads students to examine their own communities and their role within them, as they become advocates for change and collectively write their own play. "All School of Theatre plays are written collaboratively, engaging students extensively in partner and group work," explained Cartwright. "Throughout the process of researching, writing and editing, students strengthen literacy skills." She went on to explain that artists also empower Matrix students to express themselves and build performance skills through a rehearsal process of their original work.

The semester wraps up with a final public showcase of the new play. "We are unique in that the Matrix School theatre, young artists become the playwrights, producers and performers of their own work!" said Cartwright. "They don't just act."

Financial assistance is available through the Dr. Shaun S. Nethercott Scholarship Fund. Contact Cartwright for more information at 313 967 0999, ext. 3, or email her atccartwright@matrixtheatre.org.

Celebrating 25 years as a nonprofit, community-based theatre, Matrix Theatre Company is located in southwest Detroit and uses the transformative power of theatre to change lives, build community, and foster social justice. Go to matrixtheatre.org for further information.
