All workshops in August will run on MONDAY evenings, with the exception of August 2, from 7-10 p.m., at 1515 Broadway, Detroit, MI 48226. For more information, contact Magenta Giraffe Educational Director Lisa Melinn at 313-268-5074 or lisa@magentagiraffe.org.

Schedule of Workshops:
Monday, August 2: NO WORKSHOP
Monday, August 9: Cold Reading Technique
Monday, August 16: Audition Technique: the first 60 seconds
Monday, August 23: Dialect Workshop
Monday, August 30: Monologue Mayhem!

Description of Workshops:

Cold Reading Technique: Auditions are nerve-racking enough when you have days or weeks to prepare...but what about when we are handed a script and told to simply, "have fun with it"? This class will explore techniques for mastering a cold reading. We will explore making fast choices, taking direction, and building character on the spot.

Audition Technique: The First 60 Seconds: First impressions are never so important as they are in an audition! This class will focus on the first 60 seconds of an audition: how to make a lasting impression, working a "moment before" into your audition piece, and overcoming your nerves.

Dialect Workshop: With the film industry booming in Michigan, it is imperative that we lay our charming Michigan twang to rest, and let our voices ring with the pure Standard American Dialect. The Standard American Dialect is American English in its pure, unadulterated-by-region form! This form is not only preferred, but also expected in film actors, stage actors, and broadcasters.

Monologue Mayhem!: Have a blast making fast choices, justifying the ridiculous, and going forth boldly into character! Monologue Mayhem will be part workshop, part performance...so feel free to invite guests! Each student will draw a number at random, and be given a Monologue that corresponds with that number. You may be given a character of a different age, race, or gender! You may be speaking American street slang or Shakespearean English! The fun comes from committing to these characters and finding the "why" to justify the silliness! NOTE: If you would like to invite guests to experience the progress you are making in your craft, please have them arrive at 8 p.m. From 7-8, we will rehearse and assign monologues.
