Review: GYPSY: A MUSICAL FABLE at Argenta Contemporary Theatre
by Theresa Bertram - May 01, 2025
The Argenta Contemporary Theatre in North Little Rock spotlighted Arkansas theatre royalty with its bold and emotionally rich production of Gypsy: A Musical Fable, which captivated audiences from April 9–19. This golden-age musical, considered one of Broadway’s most enduring masterpieces, was brought to life with striking precision and artistry that riveled any Broadway show. With a book by Arthur Laurents, score by Jule Styne, and lyrics by a young Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy demands both powerhouse performances and thoughtful direction—and Argenta delivered on all fronts.

Review: THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE at North Little Rock High School Performing Arts Center
by Theresa Bertram - April 27, 2025
What did our critic think of THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE at North Little Rock High School Performing Arts Center? Once upon a time, in the bustling halls of North Little Rock High School, a door to another world quietly opened. With the masterful direction of Chris Klinger and the imaginative guidance of student directors Piper-Bliss Chudy, Shelby Sharp, and Brianna Wood, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe—dramatized by Joseph Robinette from C.S. Lewis’ treasured story—came to brilliant life upon their stage April 10-12, and those lucky enough to attend were whisked away into a world where snowflakes whispered secrets and magic lived around every corner.

Review: JEKYLL & HYDE THE MUSICAL at The Pocket Community Theatre
by Theresa Bertram - April 19, 2025
In a world where the line between good and evil blurs, one man dares to tamper with the very fabric of the human soul. Jekyll & Hyde the Musical, is a chilling descent into the darkness that lurks within us all.
Review: THE OUTSIDER with the Hot Springs Village Players at The Coronado Center
by Theresa Bertram - April 16, 2025
With all the political tension going on, the world needs a little laughter and humor to lighten the mood, and the Hot Springs Village Players understood the assignment with their March performance of THE OUTSIDER by Paul Slade Smith, which was presented at the Coronado Center inside the guarded Hot Springs Village. Since this was my first visit with this theatrical troupe, I had no idea how supportive this community was with their friends but let me tell you...the whole village came out! I was impressed.

Review: TWELFTH NIGHT at TheatreSquared
by Theresa Bertram - April 15, 2025
TheatreSquared’s latest production of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, presented in collaboration with the National Asian American Theatre Company (NAATCO) and Play On Shakespeare, and ran through the end of March, is a lush, lyrical reimagining that breathes fresh life into one of Shakespeare’s most enduring comedies. In a modern verse translation by Alison Carey and Directed by Aneesha Kudtarkar, this isn’t your typical Illyria—this is a world joyfully reframed through an Asian American lens, where identity and tradition intersect in deeply resonant ways.

Review: DISNEY'S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at Conway Christian High School
by Theresa Bertram - April 02, 2025
I love going to educational productions, so when Director Christina Munoz Madsen invited me to see Conway Christian High School’s presentation of DISNEY’S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST March 17, I was thrilled! It is so great to see what the students have learned, and Madsen said they did everything “from designing the set, to creating costumes, to making props, to figuring out the lighting system and spotlight, to program/graphic creation, to practicing all the lines, music and choreo… wow!!”
Review: CHICAGO: TEEN EDITION at King Opera House
by Theresa Bertram - April 02, 2025
Once upon a time, Fort Smith was considered the gateway to the Wild West (Indian Territory—present-day Oklahoma), and in turn, it had a very wild history to go with it. So, it is fitting that the first show I saw with The Community School of the Arts and Institute for the Creative Arts is Chicago: Teen Edition, performed March 13-16 in the beautiful King Opera House in Van Buren, which is just next door.
