This is the time of year that theatres are looking for productions to attract large audiences in order to bring some extra money into the coffers. BECK, for a number of years did BEAUTY AND THE BEAST for their holiday show. This year they opened the classic ANNIE.

Based on Little Orphan Annie by permission of The Media Tribune Services, Inc. Directed by Scott Spence, with musical direction by Larry Goodpaster and choreography by Martin Cespedes, the show runs now through Jan 6, 2013. The Cleveland Orchestra Performs Musical Soundtrack for Charlie Chaplin's 'Modern Times' 12/11

The Cleveland Orchestra performs the musical soundtrack for a showing of the 1936 classic film, Modern Times. In the final appearance of Chaplin's iconic Little Tramp (the character that brought him world fame), the incomparable actor-director created a comedy about man's struggle to survive in the industrialized world during the Great Depression. William Eddins conducts the Orchestra. Performing with the Orchestra in the roles of singing waiters will be Brent Chamberlin, Jason Levy, Rohan Mandelia, and Matthew Rizer.

Beck Center for the Arts presents one of the world's best-loved musicals, Annie, December 7, 2012 through January 6, 2013 on the Mackey Main Stage. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Please note early curtain times. There are additional 2:30 p.m. matinee performances on Saturdays, December 15 and 29 (no evening performance on 12/29) and January 5 with special 7:30 p.m. Thursday shows on December 20 and 27. Tickets are now on sale and matinee performances are selling fast.

What does an airheaded, "good" girl from Beaverton Jesuit High School do when she wants to be a Dallas Cowgirl professional football team cheerleader, and she gets accepted, but doesn't have the money to get from Oklahoma to the big city? She and her cheerleading friends, of course, turn to prostitution. That, at least is the premise of the classic porn flick DEBBIE DOES DALLAS, as well as the musical based on that flick. The latter is now on stage at Blank Canvas.

In cooperation with the City of Cleveland, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Greater Cleveland Partnership, through the Commission on Economic Inclusion, are currently accepting nominations for the tenth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award, which will be presented at the Orchestra's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Concert at Severance Hall on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. Awards will be presented in three categories in recognition of the services and achievements of an adult, a youth, and a business or organization that have positively impacted Cleveland in the spirit of the teachings and example of Dr. King.

Ensemble's Stagewright's concept is an excellent means for local playwrights to try out their writing skills, get constructive feedback, and hopefully get their works staged. Congratulations to Jonathan Wilhelm for developing the often delightful MIRACLE & WONDER. Though it needs some refinements, and a more clearly directed concept, it is both entertaining and thought provoking and a change from the usual holiday theatre fare.

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta became the iconic on-screen lovers "Danny" and "Sandy" in Grease, but it took them until now to record together again. November 13th their holiday album "This Christmas: John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John" was released with proceeds donated to their respective charities: the Jett Travolta Foundation and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Center.
