Despite her age, this is still a shock. She was still so active.

NOOOOOOOOO

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Wow. This is such a titanic lost for the Broadway community. I remember the only time I ever staged doored was after Mystery of Edwin Drood just so I could meet her. Once I ask if she would sign my Playbill, I said to the girl beside me, "I can die now". Chita smiled, laughed and touch my shoulder.

What an amazing woman and life!

I know it shouldn't be surprising given her age, but I'm completely in shock. Devastating.

I agree, I'm not sure why but it just felt like she was going to be around forever.

One of the greats. When people say legend, she is what they mean. May her memory be a blessing.

What a loss for the community.  Chita was so full of life and energy which I think is part of why this comes as a shock despite her advanced age.  She was one of the greatest performers right through until the end and truly deserves to be remembered as a legend in musical theater.  RIP Chita.

A lot of people are labeled legends, Chita was one in every sense of the word. And always will. My heart is broken, but beyond grateful for the years of enjoying her gifts.

Rest Easy Chita! We’ll see you again one day! True Legend!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

I’m devastated.

Having had the privilege of meeting a legend like her not once, but twice (the second time in the midst of a snowstorm at Drood), she was a woman as gracious as she was legendary. Fly high, dancing queen 💃.

I hope they put a sign for her in the lobby at CHICAGO like they did for Ann Reinking

I just started listening to her memoir! It’s going to hit very differently going forward. RIP to one of the greatest Broadway stars of all time. If there was a Mount Rushmore of Broadway, she’d be up there.

Wow, not a name I was prepared to see.

May her memory be a blessing and thanks for all the beauty.

I was blessed to have been in her presence 3 or 4 times. Once as a teen in the lobby of the, then, Shubert Theater in Philadelphia. Lisa was in the musical "Platinum". I had seen it and got another ticket to go back on opening night. I was standing in the lobby holding a soft drink and next thing I knew I was laying on the floor staring up at a lot of red fabric. That fabric was the kaftan Ms. Rivera was wearing. She accidentally bumped into me and knocked me to the floor. She offered to replace my drink but I was so star struck I was totally fine being knocked to the floor by her and didn't need a replacement!

Fast forward to 2012 at the Stage door of Studio 54. I don't stage door much at all but I just wanted to see her. It wasn't busy so when she came out we were actually able to chat. I started telling her about the incident at the Shubert and before I could finish she said "Oh my goodness, I knocked you down didn't I"? I was floored that she remembered it. We chatted more and took a picture together.

A legend and a wonderful human being. May she rest in peace.

Just give the world Love.

I was not prepared for this.  I will always treasure seeing her with Carol Channing (Together at Last), and in Drood. I regret not seeing her in Spiderwoman. What a loss!

An absolute legend! Curious to hear what Chicago does tonight to ho or her.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
