Poll Shows One Hurdle to Reopening Broadway: Fear of Jerks

A New York Times/Siena College Research Institute poll found that theatergoers who are hesitant to return worry that the people around them won’t follow the rules.

I’ve thought of this but I’m much more concerned about these people when movie theaters reopen.

Totally agree.  I’ve already had the virus and have the antibody but will still not take the risk because of the behavior (or lack of) my fellow Americans.  People are being way too cavalier about reopening too soon and I don’t trust that people who have not been infected themselves or their loved ones, seem to feel this was overhyped by the media.

Not to sound flippant, but I think fear of jerks is one of the reasons some locations have been hesitant to reopen aspects of their economy. It’s what makes me have my groceries delivered versus picking them up myself and what has me going for a run at 6:30am instead of 2:30 in the afternoon.

I can be responsible and make good choices for myself. But you can’t guarantee that the person behind in line you at the bathroom really understands what 6’ is or is diligent about mask wearing. Large and small groups alike are giving me a lot of anxiety right now. I don’t doubt that the league, Equity, and state of New York are going to take every possible step to keep actors, theater staff, and audience members safe. But much of that will be through behavioral changes which will take time to be second nature.

Behaviora! Changes meaning indoctrination

Does anyone seriously believe Broadway can return with social distancing as it is currently constuted? Can restaurants survive with them? if there is not significant change to them Broadway will never return to a semblance of normal. I now carry around a tape measure on my belt as I was, already accosted by a do gooder who berated me for not following the 1984 social distance b.s. rules. By the way I was 6 feet away and had my mask on. I also had it and did my 14 day self quarantine. Read your history about how Hitler came to power.

Was there a virus yes? Was it a strong one yes. Barry had a similar occurrence as President and none of this stuff was, trotted out. Tired of the Dog and Pony show of Big Bird DeBlassio and Cuomo . Give them the hook. already

Vegas, will not survive with these rules. Glad we saw Broadway when we did and travelled when we did. Bottom line is when we are to go we go and none of this will make a difference . Live life and take the shackles off.You can social distance alll you want but it won't stop you from get run down by a hit and run driver. so

Really Roxy? Yes, you should be quite ashamed. That "dog and pony show" probably saved a of of lives. But funny, you were doing what that dog and pony asked you to do to protect yours.

I would suggest that maybe you would have a change of heart if, like me, you lost an immediate family member to this, watched friends lose people also and have family and friends working tirelessly in hospitals trying to save people's lives. But something tells me you don't have a heart that would change.

Back on topic...

I think it is a given that we are going to see security monitoring lines outside (They already do) and making sure everyone who enters has a mask. The problem will be once people pass security and ticketing. There will be people that will want to lower their masks. And I can see this problem coming. It may have to be that there are security people inside who can deal with unruly patrons that are asked by staff or other patrons to keep their masks on. If a person is spotted with a mask down before intermission, have security escort them out. And the patrons should be aware that this can happen before they enter. I would say even when they purchase their tickets

That is one of the only things I can think of to help deal with this situation that we know is going to happen. Outside of that

In the interest of self-care, whenever I see someone post something stupid on here, I block them immediately. Needless to say, my "ignore" list has grown considerably in the past 2 1/2 months. It keeps me from feeling the need to argue with people who contribute nothing constructive to this board.

But that’s all assuming theaters reopen before a vaccine. If they don’t, then masks won’t be a necessity but only for people who want them.

Correct. But I would not be surprised if there still weren't a few problem people if there was one before they re-open. The human race.

I am not exactly sure what you are saying here. Yes there will always be problem people in the world, but if there is a vaccine, and we have it, then we won't care about the anti-vaxxers in the theatre. And the health care workers will not scramble to find them a ventilator when they need one because they made their own bed.

Or am I misreading your point?

I definitely won't be in any rush to get back into a theatre when they open again. I try to see every show that opens on Broadway but I'll be sitting it out for awhile and waiting to see how things go before I go back.

*eye roll*

Such a dumb story. People weren't respecting others' experience in the theater before the pandemic with calls, texts, talking, snacks, etc. They are definitely not keeping a mask on. Besides, is anyone truly that desperate to see a Broadway show that makes mask wearing mandatory? It ain't that serious.

Let's get our priorities straight and forget about going to a Broadway show, or any show for that matter, until we can do it freely without constraints. Entertainment just isn't that important to do all or any of the things mentioned in that article.

And "jerks"? I don't know about the use of that word, cause like I said above, people are purposely doing inconsiderate stuff during shows, but accidents happen too, and despite my disappointment when things do occur, I wouldn't call those folks "jerks." People will cough, people will sneeze, people will touch seats, banisters, doors etc and still spread the virus — mask or not. So just wait until we can enjoy mask/social distance-free before opening any show.

... or simply wait until people don't care anymore tbh, cause, sadly, people are moving on and just taking the risk with no worry — a thing that will be considered by eager producers, mark my words. Some are clearly already trying. smh

Bottom line: We all know the answer is no theater until the audience and company can inhabit the space without constraints or huge reservations. Period.

It's worth noting the vaccine is still maybe a year away. (A human trial has started in Australia, but who knows.) Theatres making plans for winter 2021, or even spring 2021 would be operating before a vaccine.

Those are just goals or dates set for budget planning, of course. But if any do think of coming back before a vaccine, there may have to be some attempts at these measures.

And I agree, I already feel an increasing degree of fatigue and growing irresponsibility among people's behavior. In NYC, there has been little to know change to the Stay at Home order and yet, people's behavior has absolutely changed from a month ago, taking more risks and visiting with people outdoors more and more. So, ushers trying to police behavior in a Bway house in 9 months when folks are probably more frustrated by it seems daunting.
