I wonder what they’re going to do about some of the language in it.
Disney + recently cancelled the Lizzie McGuire reboot and even moved the Love, Simon TV show to Hulu because it was deemed as “too inappropriate” for their service. Interesting... 🤔

Curse words are being muted, not with an audible beep, which would be distracting.

I really think this is beautiful that they’re doing this.
I mean Hamilton is NOT that old of a show and it’s the biggest broadway hit continuously and now finally everyone who isn’t made of money can experience it gloriously.

And honestly such a smart way to rejuvenate interest in Broadway till it comes back.

I think it would be smart to show a lot more broadway shows on film during this period. To get people to come back to broadway after this is gonna need a ton of different marketing

Some people need to calm down. Disney+, for the foreseeable future, isn't going to be charging extra for specific streamed content. But if there's even a hint of people's willingness to do so, that will eventually change (as far as I'm concerned people who pay these exorbitant fees deserve to do so). Second, it's initial availability on Disney+ in no way indicates that there will not be availability on other formats eventually (DVDs, Blu-Ray, iTunes, etc.). They didn't purchase it for exclusivity on Disney+, and they will likely want to maximize their profits.

Also, while it is possible Miranda may have suggested the early release to someone at Disney (due to his current association with Disney), he otherwise had no decision-making power with this release. Disney owns it and can do whatever they want.

I’ve passed this on to about 20 people (some who have actually never heard of HAMILTON), and most all of them are over-the-top excited! One co-worker is by coincidence reading the Ron Chernow book now, and I didn’t even know she was a fan! Needless to say she’s pumped for this!

My sneaking suspicion is that they aren’t necessarily going to make this a premium in-app purchase, but the cost will actually reflect in the memberships. I could see them gouging the price of new memberships leading up to the release.

I'm very very excited for this!  

I agree with others that Disney+ is looking at the big picture and want its marketshare to grow and be able to compete with Netflix. 

I do think Hamilton the musical on Broadway will survive covid-19 but I wonder if people/scalpers will still buy $849 premium center orch tickets...

If they are muting the f-bombs, I imagine "Say No to This" will have some creative editing as well.

Disney just needs to have a very long opening sequence discussing how this will be shown in its entirety without interruption and without editing, and that some situations contain extreme adult language and situations. Leave it on the screen for a full one minute prior to starting it along with a disclaimer of some type, and then just let it run.

^ Exactly, it shouldn't be censored in any way. Just a disclaimer at the beginning. Many movies on Disney+ use profanity.

I thought it would be released early due the present circumstances, but not this early. Incredibly exciting!

Maybe Disney is accelerating this because they have just reported very dire financial results for the first quarter and expect continuing losses for the second quarter. Their major revenue drivers have slumped due to the virus ( the theme parks and cruises are closed, except the Shanghai one may open soon, the billion dollar film franchises are nowhere, with Mulan their bet for some recovery), and they are probably still reeling from the expensive purchase of the FOX assets). They need to shore up their share prices and market cap.

Bob Iger should amend his statement from "we like to tell great stories" to "we like to take credit for other people's great stories," which has been Disney's raison d'être since Snow White. And Michael Strahan is such a terrible interviewer,  but I was glad at the end when he referred to it as "the film version of the original Broadway production" and not the more ubiquitous "movie version" other outlets use.

The ShopDisney website has also been up and running this entire time and has had numerous limited edition releases. Shanghai Disneyland is now open again too so it's inevitable the other parks around the world will follow in the near future. 

I like that this is being released now but I'm stunned that they spent so much for the rights for this to go straight to Disney+. I was looking forward to seeing this on the big screen so maybe they will still do that once it's safe to do so.

Many people can tell Snow White, Pinocchio and Cinderella (and many people did), but it takes some real talent to make it so great that people are still talking your version almost 100 years later.

I'm as eager as anyone to see it, even if I was more excited about seeing the musical in a theater, but I'm curious about the business angle (and a few other things).

- Disney paid a lot of money for the rights to Hamilton, and there's no way the company will be able to make a profit on its investment with new Disney+ subscriptions. I was never sure how well it would do as a theatrical release, but now we'll never know what how much money a professionally shot megahit musical with crossover appeal could do as a film. I'm a bit bummed we'll never find out. 

-  That said, I understand the logic of releasing it on the Fourth of July weekend. Disney acquired an asset that has unique value to the company at this time - a critically-acclaimed musical, filmed almost four years ago, just sitting around when people are eager for something new to watch (or in the case of people who have seen it, to see in a different format). Hamilton's value now is almost certainly higher for Disney now than it would have been next year as a theatrical release that might not have made big money.

- There weren't many questions answered. While I assume Hamilton won't come and go quickly on Disney+, it raises questions about whether it will be available to purchase, in a theater (ever), et cetera. Yes, I guess we'll be getting the muted version on Disney+, which is annoying.

- The least mysterious element is: How good will it be? I saw the show with the main original cast (sans Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was sick that night - though I met him outside briefly - and Okieriete Onaodowan) a couple of months before it was recorded. But I was in the rafters. Seeing the show from that perspective has its virtues - one of my favorite theater memories is Leslie Odom Jr. singing up to those rafters at the end of "The Room Where it Happens," and it's a good place to see the choreography in "Satisfied" - but it will be nice to have a better seat for other parts of the show. But will the direction be too busy or annoy me somehow,, or will I think it's almost as good as being there?

- I'm not gonna lie. I do look forward to seeing that cast. Having seen it four times with touring casts (often with excellent performers such as Joshua Henry), there was something about the original group. The three I'm most eager to see again, to have others get to experience: Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica, Chris Jackson as George Washington, and Daveed Diggs' extraordinary performances as Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson.

I think this is perfectly timed, given that the show revolves around Alexander Hamilton, one of our founding fathers and that the 4th of July holiday is the celebration of our nation's Independence. Seems completely fitting.

You do realize that Disney only owns around 46% of Disney Shanghai  The rest is owned by a private Shanghai Co. Disney is just basically licensing the characters and concept. They make little money off this property. 

Disney Shanghai should not be used as a barometer for opening parks here. WDW may use some of their procedures but Disney had little to do with the park opening.

Unlike other filmings (including those "Live" tv broadcasts), the Hamilton filming was directed for film by its stage director, so it should be better focused.

Given the bumpy start to DISNEY+ and what they’re doing to elevate LMM I’m not surprised by this decision. Amazing news though.
