You're probably right.  But I think they'll finish up the medley with a chorus or two of  "Oklahoma".

A Disney tribute I would love to see. Susan Egan and lion king cast and heather headset with Adam pascal and Sierra boggess and a bit of supercal and Tarzan and frozen and newsies and Aladdin. It could be a musical journey that James cordon takes into the shows ala Rosie at the tony awards. It would be fantastic.

King Kong the puppet did win a special Tony, no? So I'd think they'd want to showcase it at some point?

I think the question is less of whether they'd want to, but rather whether they CAN.  Most shows build a second set for the Tonys because they can't utilize the one in their theater, and I'm not sure that they'd be able to do that for Kong.

I'd be really interested in seeing Prom perform The Acceptance Song (with proper introduction), but Tonight Belongs to You or You Happened would also be good picks (basically anything besides Time to Dance, though they seem to be steering away from that direction lately).

My guess for Tootsie would be I Like What She's Doing, as they can basically sprinkle whatever book scenes they want into that, and it also transitions into a reprise of I Won't Let You Down.  Maybe they can figure out a way to feature Sarah Stiles into that somehow but I doubt it.

I may have read wrong in the fall, but from what I understand, they rebuilt part of the Broadway to accommodate the immense technical needs of the Kong puppet, so I think it would difficult to bring him to Radio City and maintain the integrity of the technical elements of the show. It would probably look sloppy out of context. Personally I wouldn't argue with the Tonys cutting to a performance from the Broadway, but that sure would be a big ol' slap in the face to Rudin and Hello Dolly, haha.

I could see a Disney performance opening the show, in lieu of an original song. I wouldn't mind some "Circle of Life" or "Friend Like Me" or "Be Our Guest" opening the show!

The song was written in 2006.

And I bet they do "Way Down in Hadestown." It's also possible they do a medley, though I personally loathe them. They might to feature the love stories more.

It’s probably a controversial choice as it contains almost no principals but I would LOVE to see Love thy Neighbor from The Prom as it just has such a great message. And was my fav song in the show.

"Living It Up On Top" was GREAT on Today and I would NOT be mad to see it used on the Tonys as well. It's a GOOD song. While it doesn't feature Patrick Page, gosh Amber is just a FIRECRACKER in this number and everyone else is highlighted. And it has a SMALL bit of a dig at the world today that I totally forgot about with that toast. It could certainly appease those that want "Why We Build a Wall" because they want to see a statement made. It's very subtle and I can see if they take a long enough pause there as they look into the cameras it really reading well with a bit of a zing. Also I feel like the choreography is overall better in Living it Up On Top. I mean a good chunk of "Way Down" for Amber is bent over rag-doll style and bouncing around. I am sure now, "Living It Up On Top" is gonna be their best commercial appeal number.

I think Tootsie is in the biggest pickle as most have noted the score soars during its great character songs, but falls flat during the production/ensemble numbers. Comedic character numbers rarely televise well especially in such a big space like Radio City. I also think Tootsie will want to showcase a quick change for Santino to show both Dorothy and Michael. Part of me thinks they will open with Michael’s Me Too monologue/conversation with Andy about how as a woman he needs to mind his tone, word choice and volume as Dorothy. Then they will a quick section of “I like What She’s Doing” as he changes, and to showcase the book, and end with “Unstoppable” as Dorothy emerges in all her glory.

Yes, it can cost about $200K for a show to perform on the telecast. Most shows hold aside some money from the weekly marketing budget to cover Tony expenses (performing, campaign mailers, Bway League conference events, grooming/cars for nominated actors, etc).

On that subject, BMC and The Cher Show and maybe even Pretty Woman could have been squirreling away money over the past few months in anticipation of performing on the telecast. Now they decide if it's a worthwhile expense or not. (Something like BMC might not get $200k+ in ticket sales to justify the appearance, and might be better off putting that money towards other things.)

Disney opened the 2008 (Whoopi) Tonys with "Circle of Life" so I kind of don't think they'd repeat that. For ratings, they may want to get Corden on stage as quick as possible for a big opener (if he has time to rehearse/put one together).

OKLAHOMA should go small, like Fun Home and Band's Visit. Though "I Can't Say No" is one of the more traditional performances in the show, so that paired with People Will Say could be a nice contrast.

I wanted to be Amber Gray at the end of that number, landing in Timothy Hughes' lap.

I would love for Hadestown to perform Chant, although I know it is unlikely. It showcases each of the nominated performers, alongside the incredibly strong ensemble, and if they are able to recreate their set, shows how intricate the direction by Chavkin is. It sets the show up as a Modern Myth fairly well (most people know who Hades is, and what the underworld is, and Chant illustrates the semi steampunk version of it in the show).

I think Hadestown might do a medley of the opening into Livin’ it Up On Top or Way Down Hadestown.

Oklahoma! should do the title song. They have yet to do it. It gives the audience some idea of the concept.

Tootsie will probably do something with the quick change. ( I Like What She’s Doing)

Kiss Me, Kate should feature Kelli (So in Love or I Hate Men) and maybe couple it with Too Darn Hot.

The Prom needs to do something other than Dance With You (please...I like the song but enough is enough)

Beetlejuice will probably do a medley of the opening with Brightman popping in from someplace and a group number (Day-o?)

I'd love for The Prom to do a medley of Changing Lives (reprise), into Just Breathe or Dance With You, ending with Time To Dance.

If the Cher show performs maybe they'll do the Finale, bringing Cher herself out at the end for the final Believe part?

Hadestown won’t do Wait for Me. That’s giving away way too much and it features a performer who’s not even nominated. It’s a gorgeous scene but I highly doubt they’re performing it on the Tonys.

I feel like Tootsie is obviously going to do "I won't let you down". I'd love for them to throw in "What's Gonna Happen" somehow since I think that has the biggest cried response

So seeing Tootsie on GMA and Hadestown on Ryan and Kelly... 1.) Tootsie should do Unstoppable again. That quick change is just MADE for the Tonys and 2.) Hadestown should NOT do Way Down on Tony Night. To me it just doesn't work without the effect of Hades and Persephone descending into Hell in the end and the choreography really is just made up of parading around in circles. "Living It Up on Top" really is a much more commercially appealing number for them. Though.... Page appearing from the darkness was pretty sweet.

While I think Living it Up on Top is a great number in its own right, I really feel like it’s the wrong pick for the Tonys. While it could be commercially appealing, I think it’s just too lighthearted and would seem more misleading to viewers who don’t know the show. I personally think Why We Build the Wall would make for a striking choice. While the lack of Hades and Persephone descending does take away from Way Down Hadestown, even without that element, I’d still prefer that number over Living it Up on Top. Hadestown is already selling very well, so I think the number should be chosen based on what works best, rather than what’ll make the show more money

I don't want Hadestown to make the same mistake that The Band's Visit did. Picking a number that is very true to the show but does not capture the attention of people that don't know what it is about. The whole point of Tony night is to not just appeal to the people you already have in the palm of your hands, it's to appeal to everyone else. The WORST choice they can make would be to perform "Why We Build the Wall" because while WE all know it's just a coincidence that it reads very much like a commentary on the current president and his border wall, people seeing it for the first time that DON'T know that it's NOT actually about that... I can already see the twitter backlash of "OMG THOSE LIBTARDS PRAISING A SHOW THAT MAKES FUN OF THE PRESIDENT AND THE WALL! PROTEST THEM! BOYCOTT! RAWWWWWRRRRRR!" It IS about making money. It's ALL about making money.

I definitely think they'll do "Why We Build the Wall". It's a big number that just keeps getting bigger, and also it's got the political and cultural timeliness/relevance factor to the average watcher who might not have seen the show yet and I think that number will draw the most people in.

Would they risk alienating potential audience members and also drawing unnecessary attention from one side of the political spectrum? I get that the song came first but certain people are not known for their rational analysis or ability to appreciate or research facts so that just seems like it's asking for trouble unless they want to actively court controversy.

I haven't seen Tootsie yet but I assume they have to highlight Santino.

I would pick a Kelli song for Kiss Me Kate but Roger makes a good point about showing off the choreography. Not that everyone is looking up show clips but I think KMK is unique in having so much recorded material already available.

If there's a Disney celebration, I hope they go all out. After 25 years, they deserve to show off.

I keep thinking about how electric the Comet performance was 2 years ago, and if that was put together by Rachel Chavkin, then I expect great things from Hadestown this year.
"

I was on stage with them that year. And Rachel was with us at all the rehearsals. So yes :)

I haven't seen Hadestown, so I'm having a hard time understanding why Why We Build The Wall would be perceived as an anti-Trump song.  I don't know how it is staged, but from listening to it, it seems like those on that side of the political spectrum would endorse the words of the song and the "strength" of Hades singing it. (Recall, how Reagan and his ilk thought of Born in the USA).  Or is it just because Hades is leading it? Or do y'all think the Trump people equate Hades with the "devil" or "Satan"?  Yes, I know many Trump supporters are snowflakes and see insult/attack/aspersion where it doesn't exist.
