Interesting article... wondering what shows are circling The Broadway Theatre...? The West Side Story revival perhaps? Tina? Dreamgirls? Crazy For You?

I wouldn't read too much into it.

There's always shows circling around theaters, but it doesn't mean anything. The show may not be making a ton of money, but it's still selling okay. The Shuberts are not going to push them out for another show right now, except for if it is Hamilton 2.

Sort of off-topic, but I feel like Dreamgirls is just dead in the water at this point in time. Maybe someone can fill me in but I haven't heard anything about it in months.

the show is not in trouble; it is making money weekly.

Could it find itself in trouble sooner rather than later? Yep, if their marketing does not pay dividends.

Riedel makes multiple errors in his column (as usual).

The show is not in stop clause territory.

The Shuberts are among the producers, which coincidentally includes both other major landlords.

It will never recoup.

Based on everything I have read about that London production, it would get swallowed top in the Broadway.  I can't help thinking -- and, based on everything I have read about that production, I am hoping it never arrives as I want a world class production of Dreamgirls after 35 years -- that, if they decide to bring out in, they are able to book something like the Broadhurst or the Sondheim.

Dreamgirls was amazing in London, if they can get a better Deena, it will be perfect.

Morbid curiosity had me kinda hoping to see this when I come up in June, but based on this thread, I was expecting the show to close before then. Then they suddenly announced that "Tickets for KING KONG Now On Sale Through September 1, 2019", and they did NOT extend the discount offer into the new block of dates.

Anyone care to speculate as to what's going on?

It doesnt usually mean anything. Sometimes they use it as a plot to make shows look like theyre selling out and need to release more tickets. SUMMER was selling well into next year and....well.

I don't understand how extending the on-sale dates and discontinuing the discount is going to help fill the house. Seems to me that they've diminished motivation to buy and diluted the attendance for any given performance by increasing the available options for the limited number of people interested in seeing the show.

Not at all, extensions are often used as a way for producers to gather interest in advance sales. It's often seen that the larger an extension the worse sign it is (unless it's a mega hit show of course).

There is a discount on telechargeoffers.com.

The night I saw it I was with so many foreign tourists.  I think if they can hang on until the summer, they would do well.   I can't imagine any non-theatre geek New Yorker buying a ticket.

The only discount on TelechargeOffers.com is the preexisting one for the original on-sale dates; as I noted above, they did not extend the discount for the new block of tickets.

You went to www.telechargeoffers.com? Or you just are adding extra mental steps of finding a code elsewhere and then taking it to telechargeoffers.com. If you just do the former, you'll get a discount.

I wouldn't read too much into that. The Shuberts OFTEN invest in the shows at their theaters. Matilda was a notable exception.

Yes, but the noteworthy point was that all 3 major landlords were producers. That does not happen often.(And re the Shuberts, being a producer does not suggest that they have literally invested in the show. Oftentimes, it's some concession that got them there. )

I'd say it's in trouble. Countless shows have announced massive extensions, then announced a closing date like a month later.

I went to the matinee this past Wednesday and I have to say the orchestra was pretty full. Only the rear extreme sides were empty. I took a walk upstairs at intermission and I would say 50% full.

The audience was 85% tourist and loving it. I did have to laugh because both souvenir stands at the end of the performance were getting swamped. I can see a lot of unhappy people opening up a box to "King Kong" socks this coming holiday.
