This is an amazing cast and director and I'm wondering if Julianne Moore can sing. If she can, she'll definitely take mainstream movie goers by surprise.

Rachel Bay Jones and Idina Menzel... I am so sorry.

Singing aside, Julianne Moore will be amazing as Heidi. This cast is amazing!

I love Julianne Moore so much. I hope she can sing, though. She was dubbed for Bel Canto, but in that film she played an international opera star, which is a different matter.

I guess from that, all she needs is a really good vocal coach and she'll handle the songs just fine. Although personally, Toni Colette would've been amazing in this, but I'm not a Hollywood producer so what do I know? It would be interesting if there were other actors considered for Heidi.

I think she will be great in the role.  She is having an incredible career and a musical at this point is amazing.

Looks like Platt is officially announced.

Seems really out of left field considering the other names be thrown out there. What wonders Kate Winslet or Toni Collette could’ve done to this role.

Yes it’s a shame Julianne Moore was so underwhelming in the role.

Great casting! You don't need to be an expert at singing to crush that song and I have no doubts that Julianne will nail it.

(Though I do think Toni Colette needs a musical movie at some point.)

But there is a part of me, no matter how well it's acted, Dear Evan Hansen on film will seem like a teen-drama TV movie with songs...Even onstage it was a little After School Special=ish (sorry for those of you too young to get that reference...).

No one ever said otherwise.  What you just described is exactly what the show always was and always will be.  The film isn’t aspiring to be anything more but a film adaptation of an After School Special-type musical.  It’s like saying people expected the film adaptation of MAMMA MIA! to be a musical drama on film.

I mean...it did win Best Musical so clearly it did aspire to be more than just an after school special.

The person is just remarking that behind all the buzz and marked up ticket prices to see it-that is what it is:

a predictable after school special.

And I also firmly believe the worst casting here is Evan. Ben Platt is an adult and visually an adult.

They 100 percent should have cast an exciting unknown up and comer.

I mean him next Julianne Moore?! He's not gonna seem like a kid at all.

The thinness of the plausibility of the plot relies on this being a KID that did this.

She turns 60 in Dec. which won’t be long after shooting, if not at the tail end. Might be their thinking — he’s several years too old, so let’s balance it out with her being too old.

Evan doesn't work if he's not believable as a kid. The only reason you can sympathize with him and not hate him at the end is because we are willing to forgive his foibles as part of growing up and making mistakes which he regrets and learns from. If it's clearly a mature adult making these choices - they're kind of unforgivable and make the Evan character downright creepy. At least those were my thoughts on it.

Maybe I can look at it like the Grease film - everyone is far too old for their roles. If I just accept that with a little suspension of disbelief, I can move on and enjoy the film (as much as one can for Grease). Or maybe, they'll use a dash of CGI (ala PeeWee) to age everyone down - with AI, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be too difficult or out of budget.

I just hope Moore can sing it and isn’t “passable” like Crowe or Bronson. That will really kill the vibe.

Unlike Javert, which is a completely sung-through role, Heidi Hansen doesn't require a powerhouse vocalist, but, rather, a powerhouse actor. "Good for You" and "So Big/Small" are all about the emotions behind the songs, not vocal ability, and I'm certain that Julianne Moore will have no problem conveying them expertly.

I guess I come from the musical theater world where you can convey the emotions behind the song and sound good? But maybe she’s a great singer! We don’t know yet!

Scroll up, there’s video of her singing in a film.
