Van de bijna zeventig opera’s die Gaetano Donizetti de wereld heeft nagelaten, is Lucia di Lammermoor waarschijnlijk zijn belangrijkste. Met dit dramma tragico bewees Donizetti de waardige evenknie van belcantogrootmeesters als Rossini en Bellini te zijn.
Het dramatische verhaal van Lucia di Lammermoor heeft het allemaal: in nevelen gehulde, Schotse kastelen, een familievete, een visioen, een verboden liefde, een verstoorde bruiloft, een duel, een grimmig kerkhof én een bloedige afloop.
Na alle tragiek, je raadt het misschien al, verliest ons hoofdpersonage in het laatste bedrijf haar grip op de werkelijkheid. Menig sopraan – denk aan Maria Callas of Joan Sutherland – is onsterfelijk geworden met de vocale bravoure die Donizetti voor die waanzinscène neerpende.
In onze concertante uitvoering vertolkt Vuvu Mpofu (die eerder furore maakte als Astarte in Der Schmied von Gent en als Musetta in La bohème) de partij van de gedoemde Lucia, onder leiding van de internationaal gevierde dirigent Andriy Yurkevych.
