fortyfivedownstairs Announces Alf Clark, Imogen Barragga Hall & More

Since 2002 fortyfivedownstairs has offered an evocative urban space and a friendly, hands-on, personalised service to an eclectic mix of artists for theatre, visual arts, forum, music and dance events. Described by The Age as "a cultural powerhouse", this not-for-profit organisation prides itself on showcasing the emerging, the independent, the experimental and the thought-provoking. Centrally located in the heart of Melbourne, fortyfivedownstairs is found within a beautiful 19th Century building and features a theatre and two gallery spaces.

Unsettling Portraits and Art Furniture

85 year old academic Alf Clark came to painting relatively late in life, but that has not made him a conservative image maker - he uses strong colours and geometric planes to create powerful small portraits.

Imogen Hall continues her fascination with nature and the Japanese aesthetic in a series of landscape photographs, using reflection, silhouette and shadow. These works can be read as landscape but also encapsulate a sense of history.

Theatre: The Memory Progressive
Phantom Limbs
24 - 27 February

Our first dance performance for the year, The Memory Progressive, is presented by a dynamic young company, Phantom Limbs; Amy Macpherson and James Welsby, in a collaboration with composer James P. Brown. We saw this work in development during the Melbourne Fringe last year, when it received a wildly enthusiastic reaction.

Paper, Scissors, Paint
2 - 13 March

Mary Edquist resumed her painting career in 2004, and has taken to paint and mixed media with relish. These large abstract canvases have their origin in the natural world, and the gallery will be aglow.
