Michael Weller's Dark Fairytale JERICHO to Premiere at The Wild Project

The Attic Theater Company and Ted Caine will present the world premiere production of JERICHO, by Academy Award nominee (Ragtime) and Drama Desk award-winning playwright Michael Weller (Moonchildren), directed by artistic director Laura Braza (Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone?).

JERICHO will play a four-week limited engagement at The Wild Project (195 E 3rd St, New York, NY 10009). Performances begin Saturday, January 20 and continue through Saturday, February 10, 2018. Based on the play LILIOM by Hungarian master Ferenc Molnár (which inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel), JERICHO by award-winning screenwriter and playwright Michael Weller, revolves around the love affair between a scoundrel carousel barker and a maid at a Catholic Young Women's Inn. His confused violent passion and her simple unshakable devotion, form the combustible heart of this dark fairytale for grown-ups. Staying true to Molnár's marginal Budapest, Weller sets JERICHO at Coney Island during the Great Depression of the 1930s; a place and time when work was scarce, and life was a matter of desperate survival

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Laura Braza (Director) is the Artistic Director of the Attic Theater Company as well as a freelance director and teaching artist. NYC: Where Has Tommy Flowers Gone?, Moonchildren, Dark Rapture, Wonderful World, This One Time In Last Chance, The Time of Your Life, The Tutors, The Notebook of Trigorin, Strictly Dishonorable, the dreamer examines his pillow, and On The Verge (Or the Geography of Yearning) (all for The Attic Theater Company); Friend of the Devil and If I Were You (Harold Clurman Theater); work at NYMF, FringeNYC, Dixon Place, Atlantic Theater Company's Stage II, InGenius Theater Festival, and Sam French OOB. . Michael Weller (Playwright) is the author of 40+ produced plays. Among his best known: Moonchildren, Loose Ends, Spoils of War, and Fifty Words. He is the author of the screenplays for Hair, Ragtime, Lost Angels and Spoils of War, and was a writer/producer on the television series Once and Again. He is currently developing a series called Dirty Laundry for Levinson-Fontana. A musical from the Boris Pasternak novel "Dr Zhivago", for which he wrote the book (Des McAnuff director, Lucy Simon music, Amy Powers and Michael Korie lyrics), opened on Broadway in April 2015, and his adaptation of the novel "The Fill Catastrophe" by David Carkeet, premiered at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in July/August 2015 and his newest play, Ripe, is currently in preparation for production. Based on private mentoring throughout his career, he designed and developed the acclaimed Mentor Project for of the Cherry Lane Theatre, and served as it's first Supervising Mentor. His work has earned an Academy Award nomination, an N.A.A.C.P. Outstanding Contribution Award, Critics Outer Circle Award, a Rockefeller Foundation Grant and a Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award, and the Helen Merrill Award. The Broken Watch Theatre Company named their playhouse in his honor. He is President of the Writer's Guild Initiative, the Writers Guild of America East, and is a permanent member of the council of the Dramatists Guild of America.
