Garba in the Park
Even if you are new to these energetic group dances from Gujarat in western India, you'll quickly find your place on the dance floor during this spirited night of culture, community, and live music. Garba, with its repeating claps, twirls, and circular patterns, and raas, performed with sticks and rotating partners, are traditionally danced during the fall festival of Navratri and before weddings. Fun and social, they have been passionately embraced by young people across the Indian diaspora in recent years. Both are easy to learn, especially with our instructors and the Sa Dance Company on hand.

The Mambo Legends Orchestra
These former members of the Tito Puente Orchestra celebrate the USA's birthday by reviving the golden age of Latin dance. Join your neighbors on Lincoln Center's gorgeous open-air dance floor, set just nine blocks up from where the Palladium Ballroom broke down barriers and launched a mambo craze that stretched from sea to shining sea.

Tanghetto
Club meets milonga when the popular Buenos Aires band Tanghetto takes over Damrosch Park for a night of new-wave tango. Bandoneon melodies and tango rhythms are folded into electronic beats and atmospheric lights, bringing a modern edge to the iconic Argentinian dance of seduction. It's the perfect evening to take your first steps or level up your tango game.

France Rocks Festival: Mélissa Laveaux + Delgres
Now in its third year, the France Rocks Festival highlights the most cutting-edge French electro, jazz, world, contemporary, pop, and rock artists. Opening this soulful double-bill filled with Creole spirit is singer-songwriter and guitarist Mélissa Laveaux, who will fill the Atrium with her sunny, melody-driven music at the intersection of folk, indie pop, and blues. Born in Canada to Haitian parents and now based in France, Laveaux's latest project explores her Creole ancestry adding Haitian kompa guitar, calypso, and soca to the mix and giving her rootsy sophistication a definitive-and delectable-Caribbean twist.
For the second part of the evening, Delgres, a French trio with Caribbean roots that travels the old route between Guadeloupe and New Orleans, takes the stage. Led by guitarist and vocalist Pascal Danae-who has performed alongside artists like Harry Belafonte, Neneh Cherry, Peter Gabriel, Gilberto Gil, Youssou N'Dour, and Ayo-Delgres gets people moving with their intoxicating blend of Creole music, West African rhythms, rock, and Delta blues.

Heybale's long-running Sunday night residency at Austin's famous Continental Club is the stuff of Texas legend, and now the "country superstar quintet" (Austin Chronicle) brings its smoking brand of classic honky-tonk and roadhouse rockabilly to Damrosch Park. With members that have played with Buck Owens, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash, the band is beloved by everyone from tourists to celebrities, and especially dancers. Country shuffles, waltzes, and two-step are all on the menu for this big country night.

Lucinda Childs Dance Company (Mostly Mozart Festival debut)
This groundbreaking collaboration between composer John Adams, choreographer Lucinda Childs, and architect Frank Gehry returns to New York for the first time since 1983. Childs oversees this 2015 revival of the 20th-century masterpiece, in which nine dancers kaleidoscopically arrange and rearrange themselves within Gehry's stark split-level set to Adams's updated score, Light Over Water, a mesmerizing piece for synthesizer and recorded brass. Originally created for the opening of the converted warehouse now known as Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the work's prismatic views of the relationship between dance, music, and architecture remain eminently relevant.

U.K. soul man James Hunter leads us back to the early days of R&B when it was "part rock 'n' roll, part jump blues, all...swagger" (NPR). With a voice that can sigh, growl, and rip; a knack for showmanship; and a band that knows how to dig a deep groove, Hunter provides the perfect soundtrack to a hot summer night on the dance floor.

Containing rare footage of the conductor, composer, and educator, Leonard Bernstein: The Gift of Music surveys the extraordinary life and monumental career of one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. This screening is presented in celebration of the centennial of Bernstein's birth and in conjunction with the performance of his MASS at David Geffen Hall on July 17 and 18. Presented in association with the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Bernstein MASS (New York Production Premiere)
Written for the 1971 inauguration of the Kennedy Center, the Bernstein MASS merges traditional liturgical form with contemporary theater, dance, jazz, and popular music, imbuing it with the social and political concerns of Vietnam War-era America. SF Opera Lab curator Elkhanah Pulitzer makes her New York debut directing this fully staged presentation. Louis Langrée leads more than 200 performers, including the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Concert Chorale of New York, the Young People's Chorus of New York City, a marching band, and dancers in this monumental dramatic work with its eclectic score encompassing gospel, rock, showtunes, marches, and chorales.

Masters of the gaita and traditional cumbia music of Colombia's Caribbean region, Los Gaiteros de SAN JACINTO has been the driving force behind bringing this traditional music to larger audiences across the world since the group's first tour in the mid-1950s. Featuring the gaita, the oldest Caribbean flute, the music is a mixture of the indigenous Colombian, Spanish, and Afro-Colombian heritages. They bring this essential musical legacy to Lincoln Center for a free performance.

The Creation (North American production premiere)
The radically inventive Catalonian theater collective La Fura dels Baus transforms Haydn's Enlightenment-era oratorio into an immersive theatrical experience. Including visual pyrotechnics, three dozen large helium balloons, a 20-foot-tall crane, and a 250-gallon water tank, the production touches upon subjects from philosophy to genetics. Laurence Equilbey conducts Insula Orchestra, a period-instrument ensemble, along with three daring soloists and the accentus choir, who enact this musically and visually stunning portrayal of the emergence of life coupled with the continued presence of original sin.

Thomas Dausgaard, who led a riveting performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Swedish Radio Choir as part of Lincoln Center's White Light Festival last fall, returns to conduct a program featuring two of Mozart's late masterpieces. Italian pianist Francesco Piemontesi, who will perform Brahms's Three Intermezzos during pre-concert recitals prior to the performances, joins the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra for Mozart's final piano concerto, K.595, followed by the composer's sublime last symphony, the "Jupiter."

NINAGAWA Macbeth
Created in 1980, Yukio Ninagawa's exquisitely striking "cherry blossom"Macbeth is a landmark among global theater productions. The painterly director, who died in 2016, transposed Shakespeare's Scottish play to feudal Japan, where the title character is an honor-bound samurai, kabuki witches cast spells, and Buddhist chants alternate with works by Samuel Barber and Schubert. This revival of the original production, the last one overseen by Ninagawa before his death, stars Japanese actors Masachika Ichimura as Macbeth and Yuko Tanaka as Lady Macbeth. Lincoln Center will present the final staging of this beloved production before it is retired from the Ninagawa Company's repertoire.

RZA: Live from The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
Wu-Tang Clan founder, composer, and filmmaker RZA kicks off the season with an epic audiovisual film experience-a re-score of the Shaw Brothers' 1978 martial arts classic The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. With its themes of perseverance, transcendence, and brotherhood, the film was a formative influence on Wu-Tang's aesthetic. Now, weaving together instrumentals and beats from the Wu-Tang discography (and beyond), RZA performs his thrilling new score live, amplifying the film's powerful narrative and astonishing action from opening sequence to closing credit. After touring this project to sold-out venues in 12 cities, RZA returns to New York City with a special edition crafted specially for his hometown fans.

Americans in Paris
The cross-Atlantic exchange of ideas between France and the U.S. serves as a theme for this program. Louis Langrée leads two American takes on Gallic culture with Bernstein's Voltaire-inspired Overture to Candide and a new critical edition of Gershwin's An American in Paris. Meanwhile, Mozart's Adagio and Rondo in C minor makes great use of the glass harmonica, which was invented by Benjamin Franklin, the first United States ambassador to France, and will be played by Friedrich Heinrich Kern and Philipp Marguerre. Emanuel Ax, a frequent guest at the festival, performs Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17, which, coincidently, was Bernstein's favorite "party" piece.

Since his early days with the multiplatinum group Tony! Toni! Toné! and throughout his three-decade career collaborating with artists like Solange, D'Angelo, and The Roots, Grammy-winning musician, songwriter, and producer Raphael Saadiq has kept the flames of old school R&B burning brightly. For this special show, he takes his rightful place center stage to play treasures old and new from his deep catalog. Sharing the bill is Brooklyn's own Tamar-kali, recently nominated (like Saadiq) for an Oscar for her musical work on the film Mudbound. Handel & Bach
Conductor and harpsichordist Richard Egarr, who is also the music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, conducts masterpieces of the Baroque era from the keyboard, including Handel's Water Music and Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and Orchestral Suite No. 3. Jasmine Choi, principal flutist of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, and concertmaster Ruggero Allifranchini are featured soloists.

Hal Willner's Amarcord Nino Rota (New York City premiere)
Legendary music producer Hal Willner brings together an eclectic array of musicians for an imaginative musical tribute to Italian composer Nino Rota, known for his iconic scores to Federico Fellini's films including La Dolce Vita, 8½, and Juliet of the Spirits. The night opens with music from two other famous Rota scores-the first two Godfather movies-before digging into the Fellini scores in a live performance of the seminal 1981 tribute album that launched Willner's storied career, Amarcord Nino Rota (I Remember Nino Rota).

Persian music is refracted across generations with this exceptional triple bill anchored by legendary singer-songwriter and guitarist Faramarz Aslani. Beloved for setting classical Persian poetry and original lyrics to pop grooves, Aslani has been one of the most respected Iranian artists since the release of his 1977 hit song "Ageh Ye Rooz" (If One Day). He shares the evening with KIOSK, the popular rock band that emerged from the Tehran underground in the early 2000s, and Brooklyn-based Habibi, whose lauded new EP, Cardamom Garden, blends Iranian rock from the '70s with girl group harmonies and surf guitar.

Wilson shares the stage tonight with another breakout indie artist, Lucy Dacus. A striking voice in the timeless genre of guitar-based songwriting, the Virginia native's sophomore album Historian was just released on Matador Records to universal acclaim.

Emerson String Quartet
Spanning three centuries of chamber music repertoire, this program by the Emerson String Quartet and guest violist Nokuthula Ngwenyama in her festival debut, begins with one of Purcell's Fantasias, which the Emerson Quartet explored in its 2017 album Chaconnes and Fantasias: Music of Britten and Purcell. Works by Bach, Mozart, and Mendelssohn showcase the ensemble's virtuosity, from the finely wrought Baroque selections to Mozart's restless Quintet in G minor and Mendelssohn's romantic late-period Quintet No. 2.
The Emerson String Quartet performs Haydn's Quartet in D major, Op. 50, No. 6 ("The Frog") in a pre-concert recital in Alice Tully Hall at 6:30 pm.

Joshua Bell Plays Bruch
Mostly Mozart Festival favorite Joshua Bell returns, performing a pearl of the violin repertoire: Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, which was the first concerto that Bell recorded and released, at the age of 19. The concerto bridges John Adams's cleverly subdued fanfare, Tromba Iontana, and Brahms's uplifting Symphony No. 2, which concludes the program.
