ICP Class of 2010 Presents SIGNIFICANT SURFACES, 9/11

By: Sep. 08, 2010

Significant Surfaces: Selections from the ICP Class of 2010 is about the manifold ways in which surfaces - mainly photographs and screens but also skin, paper, mirrors, walls - signify: they carry visual information which is immediately accessible, as well as deeper levels of meaning which depend on context and history. Curated by Marina Berio, Chair of the General Studies in Photography Program, with the assistance of Phebe Pierson, candidate for a BA degree and for a Museum Studies Certificate from Connecticut College, the exhibition shows young artists using surfaces to parse their closest personal relationships by mining the imperfect layerings of memory or the simultaneously distant and intimate spaces of home, correspondence and the web. Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, September 11th from 6 - 8 pm and the exhibition will be on view at Andrea Meislin Gallery until September 24th.

Significant Surfaces presents the work of a group of fourteen students out of over a hundred who participated in one of the three full-time programs at the International Center of Photography: General Studies in Photography, Documentary Photography & Photojournalism, and ICP/Bard MFA. Artists included are Noura Al-Salem (USA), Patricia Burmicky (Venezuela/Slovenia), Nitasha Dhillon (India), Amin Husain (USA/Palestine), Alejandra Ugarte Bedwell (Mexico), Nancy Borowick (USA), Lourdes Jeannette (USA/Puerto Rico), Ying Ang (USA/Australia), Jackie Connolly (USA), Maan Palmiery (Philippines), Roísín Morris (Ireland), Heesun Kim (USA/South Korea), Bianca Sanchez (USA), and Ackime Snow (USA/Jamaica).
