Now Playing Onstage in San Diego - Week of 5/18/2014 THE PHILANDERER
Long Beach Playhouse
5/25-5/21/2014
Leonard is pursued by two women. Julia is a "modern" woman, clinging to romantic attachment, despite her professed progressive views, while Grace is a genuinely liberated widow who doesn't resort to Julia's histrionic wiles. What's a Philanderer to do? Further complicating matters are Julia and Grace's fathers, a conventional fellow who thinks he's dying, and a theater critic flummoxed by youth. Leonard's attempts to extricate himself from Julia culminate in a witty and blazing battle of the sexes as well as generations.

Now Playing Onstage in San Diego - Week of 5/18/2014 ANNIE GET YOUR GUN
San Diego Musical Theatre at the North Park Theatre
5/9-5/25/2014
San Diego Musical Theatre announces their production of "Annie Get Your Gun" May 9- May 25, 2014 (press opening on Saturday, May 10th) at the North Park Theatre. ANNIE GET YOUR GUN scored a bulls eye when it returned to Broadway in 1999, starring Bernadette Peters and sporting a revised libretto by Tony, Oscar and Emmy winner Peter Stone. As Newsday reported, Stone's revisions 'are sweetly ingenious, and the show is a dream.' Stone reshaped the 1946 book to create a Wild West show-within-a-show that frames the ageless 'Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better' love story of sharpshooters Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. Stone has added a secondary romance between the younger sister of Frank's bothersome assistant Dolly, and a boy who is (to Dolly's horror) part Native American'. Joined to the new book, of course, is that amazing Irving Berlin score, featuring hit after hit after hit. 'Irving Berlin's greatest achievement in the theater,' wrote the New York Post, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN 'will always be a musical for the ages, one of the Broadway theater's enduring triumphs.' "Irving Berlin's music is simply the most enchanting and distinguished complete score he ever wrote. Here we have his musical gems with dazzling new orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin. Herbert and Dorothy Fields' original book was pretty darn good to begin with. Peter Stone has dusted off the cobwebs of 50 years and provided a clear, revised book, chock-full of laughs, while always respecting the quality and integrity of the original." - Fergus McGillicuddy, TalkinBroadway.com San Diego Musical Theatre: The Local Way to see Broadway! Now Playing Onstage in San Diego - Week of 5/18/2014 THE BOOK OF MORMON
San Diego Civic Theatre
5/27-6/9/2014
The Book of Mormon is a religious satire musical with book, lyrics, and music by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone. Best known for creating the animated comedy South Park, Parker and Stone co-created the music with Lopez, who co-wrote and co-composed Avenue Q. The show lampoons organized religion and traditional musical theatre, reflecting the creators' lifelong fascination with Mormonism and musicals. The Book of Mormon tells the story of two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in northern Uganda, where a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. Naive and optimistic, the two missionaries try to share the Book of Mormon, one of their scriptures-which only one of them has read-but have trouble connecting with the locals, who are more worried about war, famine, poverty, and AIDS than about religion.
