Now Playing Onstage in Mesa - Week of 3/02/2014Mark Russell in Broadway" border="0" height="100" width="100" align="right"> MARK RUSSELL
Mesa Arts Center, Ikeda Theater
3/8-3/8/2014
Long before Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert, there was Mark Russell, daring to joke and sing of the often absurd political process. His newest and unique show "An Evening with Mark Russell" offers presenters an opportunity to include a local personality or politician to ask pre-set questions. Answering questions, performing stand-up comedy, and taking his classic position at the piano performing new and old favorites with impeccable timing, twinkling eyes and shock-of-recognition insights into American politics, he draws merriment from the pomposity of public life. He started in a little piano bar on Capitol Hill-right across from the lawmakers themselves. As he puts it, "I started at the bottom and managed to work my way down." He began knowing little about politics, but was an immediate hit because he could find humor in anything. Two years ago, after spending more than 50 years on the road, Russell decided to retire, as he said, "when I was expected to write a song with the term 'transvaginal ultrasound' in it." Recently, and after it became known that congressmen were cavorting in the Sea of Galilee, Russell decided it was time to come out of his short lived retirement. He continues to answer his most frequently asked question, "Do you have any writers?" with "Oh, yes...I have 535 writers. One hundred in the Senate and 435 in the House of Representatives." Russell spent 30 years on public television as host of the Mark Russell Comedy Specials, where it was consistently among the top-rated shows on that network. In 2012, his sponsoring station, WNED in Buffalo put together a retrospective of his 30 years. "Mark Russell's America" will debut this Fall across the PBS network. Mark Russell's first heroes were entertainers like radio comedians including Fred Allen and Jack Benny who had audiences screaming for satire. Comic anarchy, making fun of authority figures, Russell was inspired. He went out and earned the reputation of class clown, all through school. What the faculty thought can only be imagined. Then, like a lot of guys in those days, Russell readily admits that he dodged the draft. He did it by joining the Marine Corps. Returning home Russell moved uptown for a two week risky gig at the Shoreham Hotel. It lasted for twenty years! The Marquee Lounge became "the place" where politicians would come to hear Russell's jokes about what they had done that day. He is also the lyricist for two children's musicals written with Tom Isbell. Both "Teddy Roosevelt and the Ghostly Mistletoe" and "Teddy Roosevelt and the Treasure of Ursa Major" were commissioned by the White House Historical Society and had their premieres at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Mesa Arts Center, Ikeda Theater
3/11-3/11/2014
When describing Cherish the Ladies - the critics say it best…"It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn't enjoy what they do", the Boston Globe, "An astonishing array of virtuosity", the Washington Post, "Expands the annals of Irish music in America…the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious", The New York Times and for the past eighteen years, Cherish the Ladies have proven themselves worthy to live up to these accolades and in doing so have become one of the most engaging ensembles in the history of Irish music. They have grown from a one-time concert concept to an Irish traditional music sensation, literally the most successful and sought-after Irish-American group in Celtic music. Organized by folklorist/musician Mick Moloney and sponsored by the Ethnic Folk Arts Center and the National Endowment for the Arts, they began as a concert series featuring the brightest lights in Irish traditional music. Taking their name from the name of a traditional Irish jig, the group initially won recognition as the first and only all-women traditional Irish band. In a relatively short time, they soon established themselves as musicians and performers without peer and have won many thousands of listeners and fans of their music. With their unique spectacular blend of virtuosi instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, this powerhouse group combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture and puts it forth in an immensely humorous and entertaining package. The past years have seen the group traveling all over North and South America, the United Kingdom and Europe, Australia and New Zealand performing in the finest concert halls and international festivals. They are equally at home in front of a symphony orchestra, a performing arts center, a folk festival or even the White House. They have been named Best Musical Group of the Year by the BBC, Entertainment Group of the Year by the Irish Voice Newspaper, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall's International Group of the Year Award at the Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland and voted the Top North American Celtic act by NPR Radio's "Thistle and Shamrock". They have shared the stage with such noted entertainers as James Taylor, Joan Baez, Emmy Lou Harris, The Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, The Chieftains and dozens of symphony orchestras. The "Celtic Album", their collaboration with the Boston Pops Symphony led to a 1999 Grammy nomination. The Ladies have recorded ten highly acclaimed albums. Their quintessential holiday album "On Christmas Night" was released to rave reviews and was chosen as one of the top Christmas Albums of the Year by The New York Times, Washington Post, The Village Voice and many other nationally syndicated Newspapers. Cherish the Ladies have appeared on CBS This Morning, Good Morning America, Evening at Pops, C-Span, PBS and National Public Radio in the United States and on BBC and RTE radio and television overseas. At the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, they were chosen to represent Irish music and culture at the Official Cultural Olympiad. The girls continue to blaze forward and continue to enchant audiences worldwide.

In London, 1605, a down-and-out playwright called Shagspeare receives a royal commission to write a play promoting the government's version of the Guy Fawkes' Gunpowder Plot. As Shag navigates the dangerous course between writing a lie or losing his head, his devoted theatre troupe helps him negotiate each step along the way. At once an explosive comedy of ideas and a high-stakes political thriller, Bill Cain's award-winning EQUIVOCATION deftly reveals the cat-and-mouse games in politics and art, and the craft of learning how to speak the truth in difficult times.
