Miami Beach police have confirmed that singer Justin Bieber was arrested for drag racing and DUI on Thursday, January 23. According to WTVJ in Miami, Florida.
The Miami Beach Police Dept confirmed news of the arrest on their official Twitter account, posting: "#BreakingNews confirming @justinbieber has been arrested for DUI & Drag Racing more info & press release coming."
The officer estimated that the two cars "attained an approximate speed of about 55-60 mph" in a residential area that is zoned for 30 mph. The officer was able to stop the red vehicle - a Ferrari - driven by Bieber's friend R& B singer Khalil Sharieff.
The police noted on their official Twitter feed: #BreakingNews also arrested with @justinbieber for drag racing and DUI @CrazyKhalil .
Bieber, 19, told cops he had a beer, was under the influence of anti-depressants and had been smoking pot all day, police sources told The Miami Herald.
Miami Beach Police spokesman Sgt. Bobby Hernandez told NBC Miami that the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. and that Bieber had failed a sobriety test done at the scene. The pop star was reportedly incoherent and had his hands in his pockets and resisted arrest without violence.
Bieber, who was driving was driving a rented yellow Lamborghini, had a passenger in the car along with him. A second car involved in the drag racing incident was a red Ferrari. That driver was also arrested, police said.
His representatives and lawyer have not yet replied to requests for comment. The 19-year-old recently announced he would be retiring from his music career, but later retracted the comments.
Bieber has received numerous awards, including both Artist of the Year Awards at the 2010 American Music Awards and the 2012 American Music Awards, and was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards.
With a global fan base, termed as "Beliebers", and over 40 million followers on Twitter, he was named by Forbes magazine in 2012 as the third-most powerful celebrity in the world.
