According to Deadline, The Weinstein Company has officially aquired the rights to Shane Salerno's documentary SALINGER. The film, which has been in production for years, chronicles the life of the reclusive author of such novels as CATCHER IN THE RYE and FRANNY AND ZOOEY.
The studio reportedly viewed the film on Sunday before the Academy Awards, and signed a deal immediately after.
The Weinstein Company plans to release the film later on this year - just in time for Oscars season - with PBS' AMERICAN MASTERS premiering the doc sometime in the future. PBS had acquired the U.S. television rights prior to Harvey Weinstein and his acquisitions team securing the theatrical rights. In total, the film was sold for over $5 million, according to Deadline. This marks one of the largest sums for a feature documentary in movie history.
Simon & Schuster have also inked a seven-figure deal with Salerno, to turn the documentary into biography, the site reports.
