Hart House Theatre Announces 2010 / 2011 Season

Hart House Theatre is proud to present Peter Shaffer's Tony Award winning modern masterpiece Equus, running November 12 -27, 2010.

Hart House Theatre is known for showcasing Toronto's best emerging artists in rarely-seen and highly-anticipated productions, and this November is no different. The second show in Hart House Theatre's 2010/2011 Season is Equus, a beautiful psychological drama that many have heard of, but most Torontonians have never had a chance to experience. Equus is the story of a psychiatrist who seeks to understand the validity of his life's work when faced with the task of analyzing the devout reasons that motivate a boy to violently blind horses.

Equus is directed by Elenna Mosoff (for Hart House Theatre: Reefer Madness: The Musical, The Rocky Horror Show, Godspell), she is making her return to the Toronto theatre scene after earning her MFA in Directing from Ohio University and working professionally in New York City and in Europe. On her long-awaited return to Hart House Theatre, Elenna expressed: "There is no other place I'd rather make my "re-launch" since returning to Toronto. Hart House has always been my greatest cheerleader. For this, not only am I grateful, I am lucky."

Ms. Mosoff is sure to make you think with her unique and conceptual production of Equus. The set is a bare structure comprised of 21 swings made of chains and wood, a far cry from the typical 'barn & bench' approach to the play. Each character gets their own swing, or "reins" as Elenna notes while musing over her simple yet extravagant set. "Each character exists reined in their own isolation. We chose to remove the borders and legs of the stage space, creating a set that is as open and exposed as the characters before you become."

Peter Shaffer's beautiful and disturbing masterpiece, under the direction of the capable Elenna Mosoff is sure to be another formidable piece of theatre on the Hart House Theatre stage.
