Following their packed performances of musical comedy Peter and the Starcatcher, West Virginia Public Theatre brings another piece of Broadway to North-Central West Virginia: Directed by WVPT Artistic Director Jerry McGonigle, A Hatful of Rain tells the powerful story of American war hero Johnny Pope as he faces new battles on the home front. Michael V. Gazzo's play premiered on Broadway in 1955, and was adapted into a popular film starring Don Murray and Eva Marie Saint in 1968. Considered shocking and groundbreaking at the time in its unflinching portrayal of issues such as veteran health care scandals and opioid abuse, this classic drama seems even more relevant today. 'Paradise Park The Musical' has been adapted for the stage by acclaimed West Virginia filmmaker, director and Allen Media Strategies client Daniel Boyd. Mountain Stage's own Larry Groce has written a new and extensive score for this premiere. The story contains themes familiar to citizens of West Virginia; poverty, religion, hopes and dreams and centers on people caring for other people, through hard times, through natural disasters and through everyday life. Many people know the story of Shrek, the lovable but fierce ogre who unwittingly becomes a hero to both fairy tale creatures and a princess, but many do not realize that the film was also made into a hilarious and heartwarming Broadway show in 2008 which was nominated for eight Tony Awards and won one. While Shrek the Musical has long since left Broadway, that has not stopped the show from becoming a favorite for many local theatres. In June The Aracoma Story, Inc. will be bringing this delightful play to the masses at Chief Logan State Park. Children, adults, and all those who believe in fairy tales are invited! (more...)

The Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF) at Shepherd University, dedicated to producing and developing new American theater, welcomes Nicole M. Smith, as the full-time Company Manager. Smith served as CATF's seasonal Company Manager from 2012 to 2014, before accepting a position at the notable Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. The Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University will produce the world premiere of Michael Weller's A Late Morning (in America) with Ronald Reagan as part of its 2018 season. This play is a result of a collaboration between Weller, director Sam Weisman, and actor Tim Matheson. Initially, Matheson was to originate the role of Ronald Reagan. However, due to an unexpected scheduling conflict, Matheson is no longer able to be a part of the project and the role will be recast. (more...)

Andre Raphel, Music Director of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra for the past fifteen years, was honored with the title of Conductor Laureate on Wednesday evening, May 2 at a recognition ceremony taking place in Wheeling, West Virginia.    On May 18, he will conduct the Wheeling Symphony in its season finale program featuring Respighi's "Pines of Rome" and works by Dvorak, Beethoven and Richard Strauss. It's a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, a story of family and fighting and politics, and how you can always seek redemption. Join Theatre West Virginia this July for the beloved classic outdoor drama, Hatfields & McCoys. It's the story of Devil Anse Hatfield and his sons and their decades long feud with Ran'l McCoy and his sons. A story that made headlines in 'The New York Times,' it had people from all over coming to southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky to find out why there was so much blood shed between these two families.
