Jemma Kahn's THE EPICENE BUTCHER AND OTHER STORIES has taken South Africa, and the world, by storm. During the recent run of the show at the National Arts Festival, BroadwayWorld South Africa described the show as 'moving and hysterical, and never less than completely absorbing.' What is it about this traditional Japanese form of illustrated storytelling which is so powerful in its simplicity? Kamishibai is ideally suited as a form of performance for the many festivals that are springing up in community spaces, as the illustrations can be created to be used by multi-lingual storytellers, who can adapt their stories to their audiences. The performances are low-budget, but highly effective and impactful.
Clanwilliam Hosts Annual Arts Project & Lantern Festival Today

The time has come for the grateful and happy announcement that the annual Clanwilliam Arts Project and Lantern Festival in conjunction with the University of Cape Town will be going ahead as planned in 2013 through financial assistance from Fairheads Benefit Services, Rooibos Limited and the Milagro Foundation. This year, the crew will leave for Clanwilliam today, 1 September to work with children in the town. The Lantern Festival will take place today, 8 September.

The young internationally acclaimed South African soprano, Pretty Yende captivated opera lovers the world over when she made her spectacular recital debuts at the Teatro Alla Scala in Rome, the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Wigmore Hall in London. Soon this Piet Retief, Mpumalanga born musical wonder will grace the stage at the Teatro at Montecasino on Thursday, 14 November 2013 followed by a concert at the Artscape Opera House, Cape Town on Saturday, 16 November 2013. In partnership with the National Arts Festival, Junkets is about to publish two groundbreaking volumes of South African monologues: NOW I AM ALONE 1 and NOW I AM ALONE 2. Both volumes have been compiled by Robin Malan, Diana Wilson and David Fick.

From today 14 August to 8 September at Kalk Bay Theatre, Cape Town audiences have the chance to see this production by Coppen, the 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre.
