The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical - 2019 - Broadway

Starting at $39

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, the original musical adaption of Rick Riordan's New York Times best-selling novel, will arrive on Broadway this fall for a strictly limited 16-week holiday engagement at the Longacre Theatre (220 W. 48th Street) following the recent successful conclusion of its 32-city North American First National Tour which has been celebrated by audiences and critics alike.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is "worthy of the gods!" (Time Out New York). The Greek gods are real, and they're ruining Percy Jackson's life. As a son of Poseidon, Percy has newly discovered powers he can't control, monsters on his trail, and he is on an epic quest to find Zeus's lightning bolt and prevent a war between the gods. Normal is a myth when you're a demigod. This "winning adaptation" (The Hollywood Reporter) of the best-selling Disney-Hyperion novel by Rick Riordan is "electrifying!" (Newsday). Featuring a "fast-paced, decibel blasting" score (The Broadway Blog), this musical is "mesmerizing" and proves "lightning can strike twice!" (TheaterMania).

Featured Reviews For The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

THE LIGHTNING THIEF: SCARCELY A STRIKING ATTRACTION FOR THE WHOLE DARN FAMILY - New York Stage Review
Although the musical is mostly a yawn for adults (and probably smarter kids), sub-par visuals make it even a less attractive event. The production looks so cheap visually that let's be kind and not name the designers. Industrial scaffolding can only go so far to create places effectively, while the cheesy effects for the story's monsters and miracles are heralded by blasts of white lights meant to bedazzle viewers into not seeing the stagecraft. There is not an inch of magic anywhere on the stage, unfortunately.

Broadway Review: ‘The Lightning Thief,’ The Musical - Variety
McCarrell's believable boyishness, sweet vulnerability, gangly posturing and off-handed humor is appealing, and he manages to keep you engaged even if you've long lost interest in the details of the plot. His singing is sure, and in "Good Kid," the best number in the musical, he shows in a heartbreaking way the pain of trying to fit in before he discovers that "normal is a myth."

The preteens dressed in their matinee finest seemed to be having a swell time when this critic attended The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. So really, if this review seems less than enthusiastic, it's written with the full understanding that pleasing an overly-seasoned playgoer who, until recently, thought this was going to be a jukebox musical about some songwriter named Percy Jackson, is not a priority.
