The lights go dark and four giant screens light up with a blinking cinematic countdown...9, 8, 7, 6, 5...the sound of a helicopter approaching builds to deafening proportions as a garishly huge make-up mirror backstage at the seedy club/brothel Dreamland lights up with an unforgiving glare and the "Movie In Our Minds" begins to roll!

Miss Saigon at Near West Theatre is a high tech explosion of video, photography, lights, rigging and music together with a phenomenal teen cast of fierce energy and brazen commitment to the emotional journey of this show. This rock opera feels like Evita or Jesus Christ Superstar on steroids, You can feel the foreboding tragedy looming in fateful inevitability as Mariah Burks, in the role of Kim, gives the performance of a lifetime along with Xavier Reminick as the ratty, opportunistic Engineer and Mike Glaven as the American G.I. who wins her heart and breaks it in two.

This is a HOT show in a HOT theater. It's the Vietnam War, with all the deception, the misplaced patriotism, the idealism, the courage and the horror.....and its a MUSICAL! Sweat it out!!... it's more than worth it. The heat is ON in Saigon.

It is always exciting when you sit in a theater to see the world premiere of a new musical. The Arena Stage's Kreeger Theater was a buzz in anticipation of SNOW CHILD which is a co-production with Alaska's Perseverance Theatre. Why Perseverance? Four years ago, Smith and Perseverance Artistic Director Art Rotch discussed the idea for an adaptation for SNOW CHILD. (more...)

MTD's MEMPHIS has powerful message, but lacks heart
by Jared West - May 6, 2018

Love is love. That is the overarching message to the storyline of MEMPHIS. Love who you love: male, female, black or white. In the case of this particular show, the historically societal boundary being crossed is one of race. However, the words and songs in the script could apply to many current-day issues. First Major Revival of Leonard Bernstein's PETER PAN Launches Bard SummerScape

On August 25 this year, Leonard Bernstein would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To honor this centennial, the 2018 Bard SummerScape festival launches with the first major revival of the composer's Peter Pan. Commissioned from Olivier Award-winning director and Bernstein specialist Christopher Alden, and presented complete in an intimate new chamber arrangement, Bard's new production is the only one of Bernstein's theatrical works to be staged in the New York area during the centenary year. Alden's psychologically gripping treatment reveals the childhood fantasy's darker side, combining new choreography from Jack Ferver, with Bernstein's joyous, shimmering score. By turns whimsical and sinister, the production's cast is led by William Michals as Captain Hook,  Peter Smith as Peter Pan, Erin Markey, as Wendy, and Ferver as Tinker Bell. (more...)
