Hair

From its stunning Broadway premiere in 1968, Hair defined the "rock musical," exuberantly celebrating the hippie counterculture, anti-war movement and sexual revolution of the 1960s with a rainbow score of hits - including "Aquarius," "Good Morning Starshine," and "Easy to be Hard" - that have become ingrained in pop culture. Let down your long, beautiful hair, pull out the tie-dye and celebrate this groundbreaking American journey as we "Let the Sunshine In!"

HAIR features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot, and tells the story of a group of young Americans searching for love and peace during the Vietnam era, HAIR is a timeless portrait of a movement that changed the world. Its groundbreaking rock score paved the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time. The 2009 revival, directed by Diane Paulus, won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle also honored the production with their 2009 award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical.

Christmas is fully represented on the stage in the small Teatro Círculo Theater.  All is not quite normal though.  On the left side of the stage there is a decorated tree with presents underneath.  The same thing is duplicated on the right side except this group hangs upside down from the ceiling.  Our world and the legend of Kris Kringle are turned upside down in The Santa Closet.  Claire DeLiso's scenic design beautifully prepares the viewer for this topsy-turvy tale.

So many of us remember exactly where we were when we first heard Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill. I tapped into the excitement experienced by my ten-year-old self gleefully ripping the shrink wrap off and popping the CD into his portable Aiwa CD Player when downloading my review copy of JAGGED LITTLE PILL (Original Broadway Cast Recording). Sadly, I was met by streams of disappointment and infuriating rage listening to it.

Mari Sandvær Kreken and Tor Egil Kreken, better known as Norwegian folk duo Darling West, have just announced a brand new full-length album, We'll Never Know Unless We Try, to be released on February 7, 2020 via Jansen Records. Leaning into sunny California dreamscapes, We'll Never Know Unless We Try is a little west of center for the band's sound—a sound that Lucinda Williams dubbed “Cosmic Folk” after her first time sharing a stage with Mari and Tor Egil—but never loses the charm and feel Darling West fans have quickly grown to love since the band's first record was released in 2014. Today, American Songwriter premiered “Hey There,” the new single from We'll Never Know Unless We Try, commenting, “The sound puts a distinctly Nordic twist on American, and Americana, songwriting tradition...beautifully melodic vocals.” Darling West explains the origins of the track, “It's not always easy to be inspired to write songs when everything feels good and you're content. Usually, it all just comes out cheesy and it feels awkward. 'Hey There' came together in that kind of moment. We decided to put all fear of cliches aside and just celebrate the beauty of the connection between two people and true love as we know it.”
